    Hello,
I've been working on badly infected machine for some time. I'm down to a ClickSpring variant that will not go away. It is located in C:\Windows\??crosoft\?ttrib.exe. I have followed tutorials posted on this site as closely as possible. Here is what I have done so far:

Installed/Ran Ad-Aware2008 with most recent definitions and removed several infestations.
Installed/Ran SuperAntiSpyware with most recent definitions using the options listed in previous tutorials and removed hundreds of infected files.
Installed/Ran Free AVG 7.5 with most recent definitions and removed hundreds of infected files.
Installed CClean according to options posted in previous tutorials.
I ran HiJack this according to instructions.
I've tried manually deleting the offending directory through the command line with no success.
After several scans/removals using the above software, I continue to be notified of the Clickspring related ?ttrib.exe in the above path. Web searches have uncovered similar infestations, but they have been located in Windows\System32\??crosoft rather than the Windows\??crosoft path.
    I've ran out of ideas.
I'm attaching a HiJackThis log in hopes someone here could help.
Thank you in advance for any assistance that may be provided.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Your logs look pretty good. How are things working? I just have a couple things for you to do and also have some questions.

First run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Now delete the below files:
    C:\WINDOWS\005638_.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\002547_.tmp

Also delete the below folder unless it is something you created and need.
    C:\Temp\200806

Do you know what the below files are for?
    Code:
    "C:\WINDOWS\"
    csgzwavh.ini Aug 21 2008 627 "Csgzwavh.ini"
    untc0a2.bat Oct 4 2007 158 "untC0A2.bat"
    untc0a2.pif Oct 4 2007 545 "untC0A2.pif"

    C:\WINDOWS\ecepu.dll

The clickspring entry no longer appears on SAS scans. Rescans with AVG and SS&D show no infections. Things appear to be working OK, but I haven't connected it to the internet. I'm having troubles with connecting it through a new wireless adapter, but that is another topic altogether.

Windows Messenger was disabled in services. I will remove it.

I cannot find the following temp files, C:\WINDOWS\005638_.tmp, C:\WINDOWS\002547_.tmp. Folder options are set to show everything. (?)

The folder C:\Temp\200806 is a folder containing windows patches. I created it while bringing the machine up-to-date. I perform offline MBSA scans and obtain the patches it needs from another machine. Patches I download are organized by the month they were released. I qchain all windows related patches with a batch file. It works really well as long as I don't upgrade MBSA from 2.0 to 2.1. Nerdy ramblings...

The following file is associated with a Disney game, 'The Incredibles'.
    csgzwavh.ini Aug 21 2008 627 "Csgzwavh.ini"
The following files are associated with a Hasbro game, 'Tonka Trucks'.
    untc0a2.bat Oct 4 2007 158 "untC0A2.bat"
    untc0a2.pif Oct 4 2007 545 "untC0A2.pif"

I can't find any information on C:\WINDOWS\ecepu.dll. I found no registry entries pointing to it. Property information is nill. Could I move it, zip it, and run important programs to make sure nothing is affected?

That would be a good idea. You may want to also try running it thru the below online scan site:

    http://www.virustotal.com/

Now we need to cleanup some items from running ComboFix.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
