Cannot Activate MS OFfice 2007

My Dad bought a new laptop from Dell with MS Office 2007 for his small business, which came with MS Office 2007. His laptop came with his software installed. I installed it on my laptop (upgrade from 2002). I also went to my desktop and installed...I did an upgrade install, not sure if that matters but when I go to activate it says the activation has exceeded its licenses. If it is any consolation work for his company. I am under the assumption it came with a 3 user license (when I look online seems to be 3 or 5 users and I am pretty sure I didn't purchase the 5).

He also bought a desktop at the same time but with its own software (you know dell). I can take the software from the desktop to install on this one but have already installed this software...I am new sorry for the confusion. A little Help?

You would need to check with DELL what licence pack they supplied with the version of Office 2007 they supplied as generally unless you have a multi licence pack, the default with Office is that it will install on two PCs, Desktop and Laptop (portable device) although it cannot destinguish between the two.

From the EULA of Office 2007

1. OVERVIEW. These license terms permit installation and use of one copy of the software on one device, along with other rights, all as described below.
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device. That device is the “licensed device.” A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices.

However Home and Student has a licence for upto 3 PCs, so check with DELL on what version office you have and how many licences it comes with as they are all variable and if the version Dell supplied is the Open Business pack then at time of purchase you would have to specify how many licences you wanted (at a cost but discounted).

Thank you, I just uninstalled and re-installed using the other set of MS OFfice that we had and it worked fine. The more I look into it, the laptop only had 2 user license like you said but the desktop we bought had a 3 user license...thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate this site, it has helped me on a number of occasions.
