Cannot add printer on XP with SP2?

Hi,

I've been trying to install a network printer for the past couple of hours now and I've finally thrown in the towel.

The workstation that I'm trying to install to is a Dell Optilex with a 2.8GHz processor - 512 MB of RAM. The operating system is Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed.

Here's what I've tried:

1) Tried to add it conventionally through Printers and Faxes, but the Add A Printer Wizard will not pop up once clicked on.

2) In an effort to fix the Add A Printer Wizard, I made sure my CfgMgr32 files were updated. I'd found this recommendation through a Google search and it did not yield any results.

3) After another Google Search, I tried stopping and restarting the Print Spooler via the Command Prompt. No results. I tried running sfc /scannow, and it did not work from the command prompt either.

4) Tried adding the printer through the Command Prompt. I can access the host computer and its shared files but cannot access the shared printers. The icons are there, but I cannot enter into their properties (left clicking does not yield any results).

I have a feeling this might be a bigger issue than SP2 or XP but am needing some advice.

Other notables: Windows Firewall is not turned on, McAfee ActiveShield has allowances set, and there are no other firewalls in place. The printer is shared with other computers, so sharing is obviously enabled. The printer can be, and HAS been, easily installed on our other workstations but this one is just ... special.
