My wireless network was working fine until yesterday--the morning after XP Service Pack 3 installed when I shut down for the night.

When I booted yesterday, everything seemed to load OK, but I can no longer connect to the network from that computer, which has a Linksys WUSB54G USB adapter. The primary connection is Verizon FIOS.

The computer with the adapter is able to locate the network, but “cannot associate with the access point.”

The LAN icon now sports a red “X”: “A network cable is unplugged.”

The wireless connection icon also now has a red “X”: not connected.

This is what I’ve tried so far:

    1. Checked network security codes on the primary computer and the one which won’t connect. Everything looks OK.

    2. Uninstalled and re-installed the adapter software. No change.

    3. Tried doing a system restore to a point previous to the installation on SP3. The restore makes no changes saying that the installation of SP3 made no changes to my system.

    4. Uninstalled SP3. Still unable to connect.

    What else should I try?

I have been dealing with the same sort of connection issues. I found out it was due to my wireless data encryption. I was using WPA/TRIP. It just would not connect to my router and sit there with the message in the Windows status window "acquiring network address" or in my Intel PROSet window "Authentication process to connect to the network has not been started". I switched to no encryption...no problem connecting. Then tried WEP and didn't have a problem. I don't know what the issues is with WPA/TRIP but it is frustrating.

I'm using WEP encryption, and everything worked fine until SP3 installed on the computer which now has the connection problem.

I've rechecked the encryption codes on both the primary computer and the computer and they look OK.
