    Windows XP refuses to go past the "WIN XP (with loading bar)" page... Once it gets there the computer ticks power to the hard drive off for a brief second and then restarts and will keep doing it until I shut down the PC manually. I am currently running a copy of ubuntu on another hard drive trying to get my PC fixed...

    A virus had infected winlogon.exe on my computer. It's XP Media Center Edition. I called microsoft asking for a copy of the install CD and they told me since my computer came pre-installed with XP they wouldn't help me.

    Does anybody know where I can get a good copy of winlogon.exe for media center edition?

    Not being able to boot is a problem best worked in the Software Forum as we are too busy to work issues like this. Once you can boot your PC, we can help you remove any malware that you may or may not have.

    You may want to put your hard drive into another PC as a slave drive and copy a backup copy of winlogon.exe to the system32 folder if you are sure that is your problem.

    A search of my own C: drive (XP SP3, not Media Center) yields copies in the following location, the ones in the lower two locations bearing the same date and size info:

    C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
    C:\WINDOWS\system32
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

    See the following link of a successful outcome:

    Otherwise, try this and report the error in full detail:

    BSOD-F8, DISABLE ONE BOOT ONLY
    The first thing you should do is to get a look at the error message presented by the BSOD (blue screen of death).
    Start tapping F8 after the BIOS beep, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" window. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the Enter key. Highlight your OS, and hit Enter again and your system will attempt to restart. When it BSODs, write down the error message.
    The option to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" will only apply once on the following boot and then reset to the "automatic restart" again. ("Automatic restart" should be disabled later, when you can get your operating system up and running.)

    Here's your BSOD.

    Code:
    STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
    The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
    The system has been shut down.
