Cannot boot

I've had problems with this computer before. Several blue screens of death... problems booting before... etc.

Now I cannot boot at all, it acts as though it can't even read the hard drive. Before what seemed to fix the problem was running a check disk which it eventually prompted me to do during the boot process.

BUT. Here is what happens now. If I boot it up and do nothing, like you'd normally do just turning it on, I get this message(I think this is it) and this is it:

    Err1Err3

It's an HP computer and we have a warranty... I'm seriously considering just using it, because it's rediculous the problems that we've had with this. I will not buy a name brand again...

A quick bit of research tells me that the error you posted means the hard drive has more-or-less crashed. Meaning it's dead, and any data on it is most likely gone. Use your warranty to get a new hard drive and insist on receiving recovery discs with the PC when it is returned so you can perform your own system reloads when/if needed. HP should have no problem with giving you recovery/operating system discs so you can reload Windows onto your new hard drive. You may have to 'demand' the CD's (you paid for the OS license so IMO they are legally yours already) and assert yourself, but you'll probably get 'em.
Good luck! I hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the reply. I thought that it was a hard drive problem from the very beginning, but from what you've said and from what I've been able to tell from the diagnostics I've done I'm certain.

I just remembered, after I posted, that I created a PC Doctor bootable diagnostics disk along with recovery disks that I made. I believe that the recovery disks I made should reload everything that came on the computer. But, just to let you know, when I ran the diagnostics disk it failed quite a few things, I believe all of which had to do with the hard drive. So, thanks for the help. I'll get my dad to get out the warranty and take this thing up there and see what they'll do about it.

Edit; and I forgot to say that it did boot up again.

FYI, a dying HD will randomly work after cooling down but you can be certain it will soon be unusable. Get the replacement drive as soon as possible. :)

Also, next time the darned thing boots, you should get anything off it you would be sad to lose. I'm sure you did this already, but just in case.

Hey, you helped me solve a computer problem and I have quoted your post above. If you remember, could you tell me where you found the information concerning the "Err1Err3" message? I googled the error message myself and got nothing of value, at all. Two pages of trash, basically.

The reason I ask is because I've been trying to figure out wether or not my diagnostics were correct in assuming that because Windows did not even begin to load or boot, it was a physical hardware issure and not a software issue, or if it could have still been a software side issue with corrupt Windows files or something.

    Thanks in advance

Edit: I am extremely sorry, I meant to PM this to dlb. This thread can be deleted.
