    Hello,

    I am using a windows 7 64 bit sp1 operating system ( home premium)

After relocating to a new address and setting up a new internet provider i cannot get the pc to connect online via ethernet

On the lower right corner where it shows the ethernet icon it says '' unidentified network, limited access''.
I cannot use ethernet on this desktop

The ethernet cable is running directly from the modem to the desktop

The cable i am using is cat 7

I tried different lengths of cables and grades ( cat 5, 5e, cat 6 10,20,30,50,100 ft) and same problem with all of them so its not a cable issue here.

I tested the ethernet from the modem on a laptop and another desktop ( both running windows 8.1) and they connect fine.

i tried the cmd ipflush, iprenew etc and that did not fix anything

One my other laptop and desktop where it did work i did notice that before i connected it prompted me to select : private, home , business connection. On this particular desktop that can't connect online ( win 7 OS) it never prompted me such an option
    Any suggestions?

Launch "Command Prompt", run ipconfig , and post the results here.

    Try the following also -
Shut down and reboot with cable connected if not done already.

Go into Device Manager to Network Adapters and right click your ethernet adapter and choose Uninstall and reboot. It will install when it is detected.

    Update drivers for network adapter.

Ensure the firewall Services (MpsSvc and BFE) are enabled or you won't get the popup connection option. If you do have to enable them, reboot and test.

Windows has a bunch of auto-detect nonsense installed, yet it can still fail to detect/connect. Try disabling auto-detect for the LAN connection in the Internet Control Panel.

Another relatively common problem with an older install that's new to you is a badly uninstalled 3rd party firewall or security suite, try to find any traces via Explorer and use the uninstaller/routine from the maker.

Well it turns out it had nothing to do with my personal hardware

Spectrum apparently has a feature on their routers that locks out anyone trying to use the wifi if the self install did not go completely through good.

In my case since i did it through my laptop that appeared to be the ONLY device that could connect to it via Ethernet, everything else seemed to have issues.

The ''technician'' loaded his phone via usb and ran an app and unlocked the router , afterwards everything started running smoothly.
What i found amusing is that the ''technician'' actually called the same technical support line that i would so he could ask them what the issue was

Stupid things like this explain why I only use Spectrum's cable modem and plug it into my own router....

I use my own modem and my own router. (I don't have VOIP so I'm not forced to pay overpriced "rent" on a modem).
