I am using windows xp. I cannot connect to the internet. When I click on the Diagnose Connection Problem I get the following:

Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably cuased by firewall settings on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port(80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).

You might need to contact your ISP of the manufacturer of your firewall software.

I do not believe that it is my ISP as I am online on my laptop wirelessly. I googled the problem and from the microsoft support information I have reset the firewall, but still having the problem. When I go to the services, the Firewall shows as started. I have no clue. Please help.

    Thanks guys!!!!!

i work in a support center cleaning viruses practically all day everyday... and a lot of times the reason people cannot get on the internet is because a virus (that i just cleaned) has set the proxy server. 95% of our people use IE so i'm really not sure if it affects Firefox as well... in IE go into Tools -> internet options -> Connections -> LAN settings tab -> and see if the proxy server is checked. if the "use a proxy server..." box is checked and you know you do not need a proxy server, uncheck it. this fixes nearly 100% of all the problems connecting to the internet at work. - i hope this helps.

    Hi

Good advice. Also, the malware that changes the proxy settings also can uncheck the automatically detect setting (at the top of the Connection settings).

OP, make sure that the Automatically detect is checked as well.
