Hi all, I am running Windows XP 32 bit.
My problems started when prompted by AVG to upgrade to 2011 version. I previously had AVG9 free edition installed with no problems. I upgraded to 2011 and from then on could not access the internet.

I uninstalled it and could then get on the net no problems.

Installed Avast as a different option, could not get on the net. Uninstalled that and installed McAfee 30 day trial version, same problem.

Did not have antivirus installed for a few days whilst pondering the problem & my son managed to get a few trojans onto the PC rolleyes

SuperAntispware got rid of 3 of them & I then did a system restore at a clean point and I have followed the malware removal READ ME RUN ME guide here. TimW in malware has looked at the logs and all is clean. Interestingly, whilst trying to run Combofix, I got an error message stating that Combofix couldn't run as AVG is installed and it would be dangerous to continue. I get the same error message when trying to uninstall Combofix from the desktop.

Downloaded and ran AVG uninstaller but it still must be in the system somewhere so I still currently have no AV installed.

    Help please!!

You should take your post over to the Malware Removal forum and someone there will assist you.

    Greetings, lavenderjade.

Just read through your posts in the Malware Forum - TimW seems to have cleared you there.

Please check your proxy settings. I'm on a Win7 machine, but the path should be similar: Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Proxy server - make sure nothing is enabled there.

Edit: check the proxy settings while any antivirus software is uninstalled, and while any antivirus software is installed - we need to see if something is changing those settings.

    Thanks for the replies!

No need to go bak to bed tgell, my post was rather long :-D

ok, checked those settings just now (no AV installed) and nothing is enabled there. I will install an AV and check those settings again and get back to you.

    Hi again!

I installed Avast and checked those settings suggested again and nothing was enabled in LAN settings-proxy server.

Again, I could not not get on the net while Avast installed, Google loaded just about but tool bar didn't and it froze :(

As soon as I uninstalled Avast and rebooted, hey presto I am back on the net.

    What now? :major

I don't suppose there is still any possibility of doing a system restore to a day before you upgraded to AVG 2011?

    Done that already :(

This was after running AVG remover! Are these releated to AVG antivirus?

Use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall and clean up AVG. Please download and install Revo.

Please download and install AVG 2011 again!

Revo will use AVG's own uninstaller initially.
If you get a pop-up to reboot don't.
Hit next. Revo will now scan for registry remnants. If found please delete the bolded entries only
Next Revo may list some file and folders, select the ones pertaining to AVG and delete. Please re-boot now.

    Cheers..

    Thanks Sikvik

I downloded Revo and then AVG 2011 as you said.

I wasn't prompted to reboot but didn't anyway. Ran Revo and in the table, AVG wasn't there :-o I am thinking I have to reboot to complete installation?

A bit confused....also confused that I was able to get on the net, maybe this won't be the case if I reboot :confused

You installed AVG right? Is the net working with AVG? A re-boot won't hurt. I'm wondering why AVG is not listed in Revo!!
    Cheers..

Installed AVG, it seemed to install fine but it isn't in programmes, or on the desktop or anywhere :confused no wonder it wasn't in the Revo table

    Really baffled....

Could the combination of the removal of AVG and the cleaning process somehow affected the LSP stack, hosts file, or something similar? I'd run a system file check, see if anything's corrupted. Then maybe run an ipconfig, try to see what's going on.

How do I run a system file check? :-o

sorry, I am a dodo regarding computers :-D

Phew!! What's going on?! Why does AVG not reflect in add/remove or Revo?
Caliban, my friend we can run a LSP fix, the hosts look good or the malware team would have fixed, same for LSP, actually.
lavenderjade, at reboot hit F8 at boot. Enter safes mode and run the AVG Installer. There is some conflict some where.
    Cheers..

Agreed - just grasping at straws. If the Safe Mode uninstall doesn't work, I'd still run the SFC just to get it out of the way.

This strikes me as a little curious:
Seems like the connection was made and then blocked or canceled. Maybe some kind of conflict? But l don't see how the tool bar would cause AVG to not show up in add/remove or Revo.

If I'm adding to the puzzle, just ignore me.

    Try doing this:
    1. Go to Start Menu-> Run-> Type in: cmd-> OK
    2. The command prompt window will open, type in: netsh winsock reset
    3. Reboot

Tim, you are a genius :cool

Did that, reinstalled AVG 2011 and on the net no problem. Thanks!!

What did that do? and should I keep AVG now I wonder or try using Revo to uninstall it? :confused

I can't uninstall combofix unless I disable or uninstall AVG...

Somewhere along the line your net winsock file was screwy ( how do you like that explanation...LOL ).

If you have AVG installed and working, you can just manually uninstall Combo.
