Cannot connect to the internet, help please!

Can't connect to the internet via IE or vista. I thought i may have a virus so i posted in malware first....

What kind of connection; DSL, cable, dial-up, wireless?

When you think you are connected, can you ping.
(Start - run - cmd. In command box type ping www.yahoo.com
Any packet returns?
