Cannot find BCD registry. Cant change boot record.

Hello.

I have Windows 7 installed on my computer. I installed a second version of Win7 on a second partition to try it out. When I reformatted that partition to delete that 2nd install, I found out that I still have 2 versions of Win7 on my boot menu when starting my computer.

I want to get rid of the dual boot menu at startup. I tried bcdedit.exe and I got this message.

C:\Users\Owner>bcdedit.exe
The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The system cannot find the file specified.

I also installed and ran EasyBCD and it too asks me for the location of the BCD registry. I do not know why I cant find this file.

I am really not sure exactly how the Win7 System partition works. Mine is assigned a drive letter which I thought was strange since you are not supposed to use it. Just seems like it should be hidden or not show up in Computer.

Anyway, I came across this thread that says the cause of the problem could be that the System partition is not assigned a drive letter. I'd be curious if you have the small 100mb System partition and whether or not it has a drive letter. (Start button/orb>type in Disk Management and hit enter button. Look for the System Reserved partition in the graph.)

I'm not saying assign it a drive letter yet, I just want to see if you are using one.

 

Done. I assigned a drive letter and was now able to change the BCD.
