On the DCHP client page I see two and thier ip's are
    192.168.2.2
    192.168.2.4

On the macine you are on now the ip address is still 192.168.2.3 ?
encryption is off now or on?

  3. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

yep ip is still the same encrytion is off and I am connected on the laptop also

  4. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

All three machines should show up as DHCP clients.

when we are done will all three be wireless or will this machine be wired like it is now?

  5. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

no just the laptop and the other pc in the next room

  6. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    Great
Then Go to your connection properties on the machine we have been working with
and select tcp/ip > properties and check that
obtain an ipaddress automaticaly is checked
obtain DNS server automatically is checked

Then go into your command prompt and enter ipconfig /release
after it stops then enter ipconfig /renew

this should make it it get a new ip address from the router.

then you can go on the DHCP client page on the router and refresh
you should see all three machines?

  7. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

nope it gave it the same ip address as before

  8. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

its ok if it's the same address but does it show as a client on the router now?

  9. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

yep I see all three machines.
but what about my encryption if I turn it back on I lose the laptops connection , is my firewall in windows and in mcafee enough?

  10. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

If you are using McAfee firewall or any other,
you need to turn off windows firewall.
One firewall on each machine, never two.

  11. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

I turned it off on the laptop and just used McAfee's and still could'nt get on with encryption on

  12. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

The encryption only affects the wireless machines.
You need to make sure the wireless clients
have the ssid, the channel number, and the encryption key
entered properly the same on both and the router.
turn on encryption and then check the settings on the wireless clients.
    we are almost there.

  13. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

After you make changes like the firewall and the keys etc.
    reboot the machines.

  14. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

okay I put the encryption in all the machines and now the laptop is kicked off again

  15. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

does the other wireless machine work,
    are you doing both?
It get's hard for me at this end to keep a handle on things and figure out
what is wrong when i'm not sure what you've done.

  16. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

yes the other wireless machine works and I am doing both

  17. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

OK let's turn off encryption on the router and just get both of your
    wireless clients working without it.

Once we have it so you can surf with all three machines, then we'll
figure out what is going wrong with your encryption.

    Im editing here
the other wireless client is working with encryption on?
then try to figure out what is different between them.

  18. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

    okay sounds like a plan

  19. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

encryption is off and all machines are online

  20. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    Very cool
    they all surf properly?
    they all have one firewall?
    everything is good?
you can reboot any machine and surf?

  21. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

yep they all work and all have at least one firewall the windows 2000 has norton corporate on it

  22. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    very good,
    now the encryption.
Which type have you tried to use WAP 64bit?
    or what?

  23. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

I'm am using wep 128 bit

  24. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

aha one of your wireless cards probably doesn't support that type.
The one obviously does, because it works when on but the other
must not. the laptop is the one that allways gets punted with encryption on right?

  25. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

yep but it was online with the 128bit before I connected the other machine so should I try wpa-psk or what?

  26. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

No those are even higher standards.
they both will work with the present WEP 128 bit.
    separately.
If the laptop is on with encryption and surfable it's good.
Then when you turn on the other machine it loses it's connection.

If the other machine is on first and surfing with encryption on,
Then you turn on the laptop the other macine stays the same
and the laptop just won't work?

    Is all the above right?

  27. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

the laptop just won't work period now even if the other machine is turned off
it's as if my router will only let me have one machine wireless

  28. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

it will only let me have one machine connected wirelessly you it might have something to do with my Ip company?

  29. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    OK,
Right now with the other wireless machine off,
what is the laptop doing, searching for a connection?
    Just dead.
what happens if you right click the network connection and select repair?

  30. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

No your IP gives you one WAN address and your router does NAT
and shares that address with the machines on your LAN.

  31. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

it goes through with the repair and then gives me an error when it tries to renew

  32. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    Just had an epiphany.
we didn't check the properties of your wireless connections.
Make sure that on both machines they are set to obtain an ip address automatically, DNS auto everything the same as what i had you do on the
    wired machine.

  33. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

    they are

  34. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    Dam,
I'm going to have to do some reading.
Could you tell me what each of the machines are and the type model
wireless cards and what operating systems.
You are perfectly safe with private info on the wired machine and
with encryption off you can use both of the wireless guys.
just don't do any banking on the wireless ones for now.
Encryption doesn't keep people off your network it just keeps the info private
    between the client and router.
the ssid, MAC filtering and controlling your IP addresses is what keeps others off.

  35. topkat690

Okay the laptop is pentium lll Great Quality Rx7333 Notebook it has a Linksys
compact usb wirelss-g adapter it running windowsxp -sp2

Before some guru corrects me i have to say that by sniffing your nonencrypted
traffic a hacker can get your ssid and could use your connection.
So we can tighten up your IP address pool and set up MAC filtering,
which i was going to have you do last.
After everything is fixed up it's nothing to change your ssid if you are afraid someone gets it in the meantime.

  37. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

sound good or had enough for today?

  38. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

    okay let's go for it

  39. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

OK you only have three computers so go on the router control page where the
address pool was and where it says addresses from 192.168.2.2.to 192.168.2.100
Change the ending IP to 192.168.2.4
So you only have three to give out and they are all taken.

  40. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

    okay that's done

  41. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

Next go to the Firewall MAC address filtering page.
On each machine you will need to do an ipconfig /all to get the MAC addresses
to put in. The MAC address is called physical address it is 6 pairs of leters and numbers (hexadecimal numbers)

  42. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

It is described on page 72 if we both have the same manual.
It is telling the routar to only talk to this list of machines no matter what other credentials thay may offer.
just click enable box and add and apply for each of your machines.
    don't click the block box.

  43. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

okay I tried adding the Mac addresses and it will only show the one for this computer are all of them supposed to show

  44. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

did you put in one click add,
    putin next one click add.
I would think that if they take that they should show.
    I'll look.
Maybe don't click apply untill they are all there.
You are using caps and dashes exactly as they appear from the ipconfig window.

  45. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

I'm doing it just how the one is showing and when I click add it says I did not enter all the hexdecimals or one is incorrect

  46. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

One was there before you started?
I don't have your router so I can't click the links maybe the more info link describes how to put them in better.
The pic i see from the manual doesn't show the context spaces dashes nothing.

  47. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

no one showed up after I clicked on add I clicked it a gain and none of the others show up

  48. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

try to uncheck the box to turn MAC filtering off and then apply to clear everything and start fresh.

then check the box to turn MAC filtering on and then put in one address,
    then add,
    next address,
    then add,
    next, then add
hopefully they all show and if so then click apply last

  49. Bad_Frogger

    Bad_Frogger Corporal

    They look like 3F-EF-A0-94-1E-6F
also don't mix up letter O with number 0
hex numbers go from 0 to 9 and letters A to F
    ther is no letter O

  50. topkat690

    topkat690 Private First Class

no that won't work it says some of hex digits are invalid or you did'nt enter all the hex digits. Well I entered all the digits from the ipconfig all
