Cannot find server at...

Hello-I have a HP zx5040us pavillion laptop-new in 2003.
Last Wed.,20 Aug.,Automatic update XP3 pack-alls well until end of DnLd-after I log back in windows Msg tells me that my system has 'recovered from a serious errror' and to send MS an error report-wich i let it do.
Since then PC is fine-except that it wont find/connect w/ any servers[FireFox,Yahoo,Google,IE pages] I have it set for FF as server-
Had no problems w/wireless or ethernet connections up until SP3 Down load.
Went into Control Panel to Dbl check settings-everything still set same-so-ran a system restore-still negative contact.
Reloaded original XP Discs &Drivers,and still no joy .
Got a Winsock error Msg-but-it cant connect to attempt a repair.
I have'whats running' on my HP-it shows WINSOCK is there and running,also file is in the pc os-
Q,what do i need to put on a Thumb Drive from any WINSOCK reloads to see if thats what is ailing my laptop?
I use COMODO FW & AntiVir,FW is config to allow connections,I have Ghost Surf[2005] server sites set up for allowed[also set to 'normal' on slider.]
Tried COMODO FW @ lowest setting-still no connection.
Wireless signal strength is reading good to excellent-connected.
I ran a full scan w/ SpyWare Doctor-clean sweep.
My Brother in law [IT Guru] had time to help me w/ run of HJT-but short on time to dig any deeper this week.
I ran MS Rootkit revealer and saved to log file-but'll have to search MG Forums on how to post for a help review.
