Are you using a Wireless Router and if so did you set it up correctly and what OS are you using ??

Toke is on the right track!

How do you connect to the net? DLS, Cable, Dailup.. etc.. is that on it's connected via it's own modem to your desktop or to another router then to your desktop? I'm assuming you have a wireless router setup up and it's connected to the router/modem that connects to the internet? If so have you setup your router as infrastructure A/P?

Do you maybe have an adhoc network setup e.g. DSL/Cable/Dailup.. to the desktop, connection shared using ICS and wireless card in the desktop sending out the signal a wireless card in the laptop with the net shared via the desktop?

    Unlikely but..
Be 100% sure your connected to your router/desktop and not the guy next door/above/below you lol.. it can happen if their router is setup and running and allowing you to connected but set to deny access to the http protocol or if they have a router setup and not connected to the net.

There's a real good chance that the wireless router has a WEP/WPA key. This is basically the same as a password. Without it, you won't be able to go online. Also, many wireless devices have their own connection managers. If you haven't run the connection manager to recognize and connect to your router, you won't be able to get online. The directions on using the connection manager will be included with the wireless card's documentation or it's on the driver CD that came with the card. If you could post the make and model of the wireless card, and the version of Windows you're using, we may be able to offer some more accurate help....

True but if encryption is in place the connection won't be available it'll eject the connection after every attempt to connect to the network. Most wireless routers still come in the box with no encryption active. I do agree check the documentation as they now at least have a quick setup guide in there to run you through the process to getting online. I'm sure it's something simple. dlb is correct and I'm sure on the right track.. please post the type and model of your A/P that may help.. you can post your OS type and version but if your using the device to setup the connection most do it via HTTP and apply the settings from there, OS is irrelevant unless your using the OS' "wizzard" software to handle the connection for you or talking about drivers features/application that apply to that OS. I'd advise against allowing windows (assuming your running it) to handle the connection if at all possible.

You should be able to acess your router by connecting to it with an ethernet cable and then opening your browser (you do not need to be online) type in the adress bar "http://192.168.1.1" or "http://192.168.0.1" and then following the instructions for setup

Sounds like your connecting to the router but not getting DNS.
