    Hi,

It appears my computer was infected about 04/17/2011. I have tried running AVG, Avast, MSE, and still the computer is infected. AVG identifies svchost, explorer and one time wault as infected with Agent_r.XJ and in accessible. Avast keeps warning about malicious activity by svchost and a
    file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\qhge\setup.exe.

I have followed the README and I am attaching the logs. After running the tools and rebooting. I still have the Avast warnings and one extra IE pop up when I started it.

2nd post with the ComboFix logs to follow.

    Thanks in advance.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\3802huqum11i2ms6unrduer4lf4e38c23ptf5ey6
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\1095454348
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\2662982977
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3802huqum11i2ms6unrduer4lf4e38c23ptf5ey6
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\qi8851w3107x74l474w68yr5a83t63620w0j8r0j68
    C:\Documents and Settings\PG\Templates\1095454348
    C:\Documents and Settings\PG\Templates\2662982977
    C:\Documents and Settings\PG\Templates\3802huqum11i2ms6unrduer4lf4e38c23ptf5ey6
    C:\Documents and Settings\PG\Templates\qi8851w3107x74l474w68yr5a83t63620w0j8r0j68

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h479/MysticalMagpie/2.png?t=1303862286

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.

If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h479/MysticalMagpie/3.png?t=1303862308

    Next type FIXMBR

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

With that done, please post back and let me know how things are now.

    1. Thanks. I've been able to use IE without Avast warnings or other pop ups. It also appears faster. I am attaching the MGLogs.zip file.

The only other mechanism I have seen existence of the virus was a scan with AVG. However, I removed it during the running of the tools to avoid conflicts. I have not been able to reinstall because of a conflict with System Shield.

Any other ways to verify if it is still infected?

Also do you now recommend following the instructions for securing my laptop in the forum?

If you reinstall AVG then you will need to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials first.

This should get rid of the systemshiled conflict.

Now we need to use ComboFix

    SecCenter::

    Download and run OTM.

    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Sorry for the delayed response. I have seen some odd things.

I will send this out first as I am having issues opening the attachments windows from IE.

    Some observations:

    1. ComboFix: PEV.cfxxe dump during stage_2 (happened last time too, but I forgot to mention in the last message)
    2. system backup : The RPC server is unavailable message pops up
    3. GetLogs: hanging at

      * MiscInfo.Bat - 07/14/2010 Version 0.01 *
Running Process List Seen From WMI
      Service List See From WMI
      Get Partition Info From WMI

    4. Explorer: "My Computer" windows freeze up and show as Not Responding.
    5. IE: cannot get to attachment window
    6. Mouse: My laptop pad (mouse) does not work in Safe Mode, but does work in regular.

By the way, the explorer issue and the attachment issue have disappeared now after reboot.

You still have two lots of antivirus installed which is never a wise idea as both will fight for control over system files and cause much inner conflict, hogging of resources.

Uninstall one immediately and then tell me what malware issues, if any, remain. :)
