My father in law had a problem with is PC where all he had was the wallpaer without icons and nothing else after he started his computer. I have managed to fix this issue however now I can not install any programs. The hour glass shows for a few seconds than goes but nothing loads up. I suspect the pc is infected with malware but i can not load any programs to verify. All the software the machine has is Adaware which was clean, Nod antivirus, clean also, HJT, log attached and PC Tools firewall plus. The firewall was only recently installed as he did not previously have one. I told him this was not a good idea as it left his pc open to anyone so the PC may have been infected befor the Firewall was installed. I have attached the HJT log and hope someone may be able to help

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

A HijackThis log is really not of that much use to help us determine if you are infected. Especially a HijackThis version that is 2-3 yrs out of date. Also your problems may not have anything to do with malware, but the best way for us to know is still with the below.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Thanks Chaslang,

My father in law was getting impatient so i ended up doing a clean install and all is fine now. :)

If it occurs again I will be sure to follow your instructions and report back.

    Thanks again.
