Cannot install Widnows authentication

I recently installed sp2 and now trying to update windows. Naturally microsoft is trying to send the authentication program first but it starts downloading and then says it cannot install. any ideas?

 

Hate to state the obvious, but are you using MS Explorer, as the other browsers will not download from MS's site.

I am using IE 6.0.2900

 

With Internet Explorer, go to:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Select Express

If there is anything that needs to be downloaded Microsoft will let you know.

 

Okay, in the event someone else asks my question again, I found a fix.
Go to this link and install Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) which will work through an authentication. After doing so this allowed the PC to download updates.
