I have got a Medion cybercom md2552 laptop which had a virus,I tried to use the recovery disc that came with it to restore factory settings, but at 25% it got stuck. So I am now trying to format and put fresh windows on,but I cant because when I try to format C,I get message"Setup was unable to format the partition" etc.So I deleted the partititon and tried again, now it seems to format but then when it starts installing windows,it stops at 11% with error message-"setup cannot copy the file driver.cab".I know its not the windows disc which is faulty as I have 2 different discs, and the same thing happens with both.Any ideas how to sort this? :confused

    Hi Ken,

If you know your XP discs are good, the problem must lie with the laptop CD/DVD drive (or there's still an issue with the partition?).

Can you borrow an external CD/DVD drive?

    Hi Ken...
i had the same problem 2 years ago...if its not the CD'z you have, try using an external CD\DVD rom....if that fails, boot from another XP SP1 cd probably home Edition... recovery cd might come in a handy after...that worked for me but otherwise i ended up installing Linux on mine...

I have a external drive but ive not installed drivers for it on this laptop. When I connect it with windows xp disc in,it wont boot from that,or even show that its connected.I cant even get into safe mode ,only dos. There are 2 discs with this computer, one says "Product recovery cd",and one says "application+support cd".Ive tried both of them and neither will fix the problem.Ive installed winxp on many pcs, never had this sort of trouble before, maybe the hard drive is dead/dying?

    Ken,

Is there a setting in the BIOS you need to change to allow you to boot from the external drive? How does the drive connect?

better be a USB External CD/DVD ROM....
otherwise, you need to get one and allow in you BIOS SETUP to boot form USB Drives and make it the First Drive to boot from if you hard Disk was the Currently the First...
you don't need to install drivers K. magic happens, well , magically...

    good luck...

The external dvd/cd rom is usb.The options in bios for booting are-Hard drive, removable devices,or cdrom.I have set it to boot from removable devices, then connected external drive with the windows cd in.When I turn laptop on then, the external drive light flashes like its trying to read windows cd,but doesnt. It wont read/boot from the disc in external drive.
I can now get winxp to partially install from the internal cd/rom,but during the install,I get fatal error 800b0100-The signature for WIndows XP Home Edition is not valid.Either that,or it asks for the winxp disc, half way into the install, even though the disc is in drive!
    Running out of ideas now..:(
