I want to put a shortcut (if that's the right word in this context) in Windows 7 into the list of programmes that pops up when you click on Start then point to All Programs.

I believe the way to do it is this: go to the programme itself; right click it and select Pin to Start Menu. Once it is pinned to the Start Menu you drag it to All Programs. When I attempt this a red circle with an acute diagonal line in it appears and I cannot drag it to All Programs.

Is this correct or do I have a problem?

That tutorial did not provide a resolution to my problem; in fact it isn't related. It shows how to pin a programme to the Start Menu. I said in my OP that I know how to do this. Having pinned the programme to the Start Menu I wanted to move it to All Programs. This tutorial does not show you how to do that, but as explained in my OP I know how to do that.

I reported a specific problem. I cannot get a programme, namely FileHippo.com Update Checker, into All Programs.

I have actually run into the same issue before. It is located in the C:/ drive in a hidden folder. To unhide this folder go to.... Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Select Show hidden folders. Then follow the folders I list next. From there all you have to do is create a new folder with whatever name you want in this location and it will show up in you start menu under all programs. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs , and if all else fails, then just copy and paste my link to the top of your folder.

P.s. I have Windows 7, hope it isn't different from whatever OS you have.

I felt I did a poor job on my last reply, so I thought I should come back to it to explain with more depth.

Step one: Go to your file/short cut icon and click (Open File Location).
Step two: Go to the top of the page and write down the file name.
Step three: You will be in a folder within a folder within a folder etc...Move back one folder by clicking the folder to the left of it at the top of the page.
Step four: Once you are in the folder containing the folder of your program, find that folder and copy it.

At the end is a set of pictures illustrating steps one through four.

Step five: you need to unhide the folder containing your start menu files. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Select Show hidden folders.

Step six: go to your C:/ Drive and find the file named Program Data. Follow the string of folders until you are inside the folder named Start Menu, here is the link you can paste at the top of your folder........ C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Step seven: Now all you have to do is paste the folder you copied in step four and paste it in the Start Menu folder you currently have open.

Bam sir, BaM.:) oH, and the charts start at 3 and end at 1. Because I do that some times.

Thank you for the second post about my issue.

At first, I wasn't sure what your earlier post was saying. However, I did work it out and resolved the problem.

    Thanks again
