    Hi,

A recent scan with Norton 360 detected that this computer was infected with Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf. The infected file is WudfPf.sys_backup, in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. I'm not sure how this computer was infected and I've not been detecting any issues related to the infection, and would not have known it was there if the scan hadn't picked it up. As such, Norton labeled it for manual removal, though I've been having trouble actually accomplishing this. Before finding this website, I tried a full Norton scan in Safe Mode, a full Malwarebytes scan in Safe Mode, the Norton tool for removing the virus, Norton Power Eraser, and Norton Bootable Recovery Tool. Subsequent scans with Norton still detected the infection.

So, I found this website and followed the READ-ME. After this, Norton still detects the infection, so I'm posting for help.

    Logs should be attached.

Also, on a side-note, after running through the READ-ME, I don't seem to be able to select to run Windows in Safe-Mode through msconfig, so I'm not sure what happened to cause that.

    Uninstall the below outdated java.

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 22

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\WudfPf.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\WudfPf.sys_backup
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\SET5A0.tmp

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Ok, so I followed the steps above without problem, the logs should be attached.

Like I said before, I wasn't experiencing any unusual performance issues, just that Norton was detecting an infection that I couldn't remove. That said, Norton detects the infected driver still, but it is now in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. Beyond that, my computer seems to be running fine.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Alright, so thank you very much for your help, it's appreciated. :)

I ran through the steps above and a subsequent scan with Norton no longer detected the infection as well.

I just have one more quick question, if you don't mind:

While trying to find a solution to my problems, I came across the following link in the Symantec support forums:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH91216&locale=en_US

What I was wondering about, is the validity of the article, and if it is true this system may be compromised now. I ask, because this computer was being used habitually for paying bills online, so I wonder if it is still safe to do so, or if vulnerabilities would have been detected and addressed in the process of removing the infection.

Excuse me if it's a silly question, but beyond that, thanks again for all the help!
