Cannot remove malicious software; Spy Sweeper crashes

    Hi, guys.

I made the (apparently) TERRIBLE mistake of loading iTunes onto my computer. Now something is continually downloading to my hard drive and filling its space with who knows what. In addition, I cannot remove the program and my SpySweeper has been rendered completely inoperable.

What I mean is, I can open the Remove Programs from the control panel, but if I click to remove iTunes, the little uninstaller goes about half-way and then disappears. Several clicks do not remove the program.

I *HAD* been able to remove it, but doing to screwed up my Windows Media Player, and I had thought that this messed up Spy Sweeper. So I did a system restore to the only spot that remained on my system after drive space began to fill up. Turns out that Spy Sweeper is being messed up by something else. I can TELL the program to open, but when it tries, my system freezes up, or more accurately, the hard drive light is on continuously and I can get nothing done. This also happens if I try to open the disk defragmenter. WMV files do not open the media player; I have to open it myself and then click the wmv file. Others still seem to open the player.

iTunes loaded Quicktime as well, which I already had working properly. This is a different version though, and I don’t know if that has anything to do with these problems.

As I could not remove iTunes, I removed it from startup with the msconfig. I also removed qttask as I always have to do whenever I have to reload QuickTime.

I have tried reinstalling Spy Sweeper, but it works with TMP files which are all corrupted now. Trend-Micro PC-Cillin found no viruses on my system.

Basically, I’d like to remove iTunes completely, along with whatever is loading new things onto my system. If possible, I’d like to find those things and remove them as well.

I have Windows XP Home Service Pack 1 (SP2 messed up my right-click so I had to revert), I use Windows Media Player 9 (not 10), and I have an nVidia nForce2 motherboard with a Gainward graphics card and a Logitech Wingman gamepad installed.

I tell you this so that you will recognize some of the programs that I actually WANT running at startup.

It’s an AMD 2500+ with 512 megs ddr333 RAM, if that matters.

I sure hope there’s something here that can reveal what is causing the problem. As it is, if I stay online for too long, my hard drive starts going crazy again and I have to reset. I doubt Aluria is causing the problems, though I don’t need it anymore either. Thanks, guys.
