Cannot Remove Trojan Medfos.A, Medfos.B

    Microsoft Security essentials alerted me to an infection called Medfos.A several days ago. Unfortunately, none of the programs I have run have been able to remove it. Whenever the problem is quarantined or removed it always seems to find a way to return. Additionally, over the course of the last several days, similar infections called Medfos.B, and Medfos.X have been found.

    Another computer on my home network contracted this virus/trojan several weeks before me by downloading an attachment from a fake fedex email. Our computers are connected through a wired router, so I'm not sure if it's possible that the two infections are related.

    Thanks!

    Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    When it opens, press the Scan button
    Now click the Files/folders tab and locate these detections:

    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\$recycle.bin\S-1-5-21-2690704835-1338669896-3963195123-1000\$a03fa4e4108f2442f53858031f5da28f\U --> FOUND
      [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\$recycle.bin\S-1-5-21-2690704835-1338669896-3963195123-1000\$a03fa4e4108f2442f53858031f5da28f\L --> FOUND
    Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
    When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
    Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Do not reboot your computer yet.

    Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\uwl5jl73bkn5baix3w36826l27g5ugw

    Reboot and re-run RogueKiller and attach the new log. Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Attach the new C:\MGLogs.zip.

    Thank you for the fast response. Here are the logs requested.

    I'm not sure if this is relevant, but new folders seem to be spontaneously appearing on my desktop. I now have a desktop folder called "Alex", a shortcut called computer, and several semi-transparent items such as, "desktop.ini", "~WRL0003.TMP".

    Thanks again for your help!

    Your logs are clean. We can now reset your hidden files.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link
    Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
