Hello, I am running Windows XP sp 3 and, like an idiot, downloaded a virus yesterday. i know the file that i ran which infected my computer if this will help identify the virus.

At first my PC was very slow, Firefox and IE would not open, and i couldn't run Spybot S&D. But i could use Safari to get online and could run Ad-aware.

I tried all of this in safe mode as well with the same results and tried a System restore in both which could not be completed.

Now my computer seems to be running at regular speed but i cannot connect to the internet. Firefox and IE now open but display the screen that they cannot connect. (all other computers on my network are able to get online)

Also spybot will open up now, but when i start a scan the program closes. i tried installing other malware scanners such as malwarebytes and had the exact same problem. once i hit scan it would close the program.

    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thank you,
    Sean

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run. You will need to download to a different computer and transfer via cd.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and Run exeHelper from Raktor

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Now run this: Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

    Now run this: Using MGtools

Now you need to attach (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) the below logs created while running the above scans

    • exeHelper log
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • MGlogs.zip - normally it is C:\MGlogs.zip - only attach this log from MGtools.exe DO NOT attach any logs seen in the MGtools folder.

I downloaded and burned all the items to a cd and put it in my pc. none of the rkills worked, all came up with a message "could not create certain files". so tried running the exehelper which ran and gave me a log that didn't say anything to specific.

Then i installed malwarebytes following the instructions. i opened the program hit scan and selected the c drive and as soon as i clicked scan the program closed.

Then i tried mgtools. a dos window opened up for a fraction of a second then closed. i found that the folder C:\MGtools was created but there were no logs.

I decided to copy the rkills to the desktop at this point and try everything again. one of them opened this time (dont remember which) a dos window opened and the computer shut down. Now when i turn the machine on it shows the intel screen over and over and i cant even get to the login screen. It also wont boot in safe mode.

one more thing. I ran adaware yesterday and it found win32.worm.autorun hopefully this isn't being posted too late

    Thanks, Sean

thanks for helping. i ended up plugging my HDD into another computer, taking some of my files off it, and formatting and starting fresh.

its better to have tried and lost, Sean
