cannot select items in a window, and I have malware

I'm very new to all this, but I am sure from reading on this site that I have malware (about:blank and probably others). I tried going through "read and run me first" steps, but when I try to enable viewing of hidden files in step 2, I cannot make any selections in the window. I click on it, but nothing happens. This also happens in any other window such as when I ctl-alt-delete and try to use task manager window. My computer freezes up frequently and I have to restart.

I really don't know where to begin with this problem. Here are a few things that I have noticed are different with my computer:
At start-up, I get a window that says "missing msinfo.exe"
For a second, a black window appears that says windows\system32\runsvr32 and then disappears.
My IE shuts-down randomly after a 5-10 minutes of use.

I have hijack this, ccleaner, and some other software from this site already.

    Please help.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Sorry it took so long to answer but we are incredibly busy lately. Malware is definitely not taking a summer vacation.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis

I will run through the steps, but I will have to skip some, like clicking show all files button because my computer will not allow me to do this. I also will not be able to re-start my computer in safe-mode because of this same problem.

Okay! Because of the above problem. I want you to download and install the below program which is much better than Windows Explorer anyway.

    ExplorerXP

Later if and when I tell you to locate any files to delete (even if I say use Windows Explorer or Explorer) use ExplorerXP instead. It will show ALL files by default and will make it easier to delete anything we may need to delete.

Well, I got the last message too late and I ran through run and read me first steps until I got to the internet scans. I was able to get into safe mode to run the scans, but when I exited safe mode to normal mode to run the internet scans, my IE no longer works. I get an error message reporting critical errors every time. I tried getting the updates from microsoft, but they did not help. MSN does not work either.

What now? (I am writing this message from a computer at work).

Can I download the explorerXP to this computer onto a disk and upload it to my computer at home that way?

Yes you can do that but it will not help you with IE. ExplorerXP is not a web browser.

Try also downloading and using a different browser Mozilla FireFox

You cannot do the online scans with FireFox but perhaps it will give you back internet access. Let me know.
