Cannot Uninstall Hardware!

I had some issues after booting into safe mode the other night, in that the computer would not boot into normal mode - instead it would continue returning to safe mode on every reboot. As part of trying to fix the problem, I chose the "last known good configuration" on the Windows boot menu, and since then, I have been having problems:

I have a Linksys Wireless PCI card, and after booting with last known good configuration, of course the driver was uninstalled. But, the "Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter Packet Scheduler Miniport" still remains. I reinstalled the card and I have internet access, but the computer still believes there is a card still installed, and names the card #2.

When I go to configure the IP settings, it complains that a similar device exists but is not connected - and the IP is in use by that device. I can assign the IP, but this is causing issues. The worst thing is, the rogue Miniport cannot be uninstalled, even in safe mode! It says it failed because it is required to boot. Is there any way that I can remove it so the system stops thinking I have two cards?

This is on Windows XP SP2. Thanks in advance for your help. I post here because I think this is more of a windows issue than a driver issue. Cheers.
