cannot uninstall norton products from my window xp

    I cannot uninstall norton system works 2005 on my computer. Ive tried uninstalling by using the control panel and editing the registry, but both were unsuccessful. There were no references to 'SYMTDI' or 'NISDRV' for me to delete in registry and I keep getting "windows encountered a problem and cannot remove application" or "install failed. Gathering error info" (I'm trying to uninstall). I am very challenged when it comes to this type of stuff, and I have been trying to remove norton for a few hours! Please help. Thanks
