Cannot Update

running a legit version of vista.

This computer which is new cannot update using windows update , i cannot go on any microsoft site and update because microsoft sites do not work , cannot update windows defender and i also cannot log in to MSN messenger....

What the hell is wrong , its really pissing me off.

I already tried with firewalls turned off and even uninstalled my expired version of norton , i am now using Avast! home edition.

Hi

Just to make sure run the Norton removal tool http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html to clean up any remaining components, uninstalling Symantec products via Add/Remove doesnt always remove all the components of Norton ( sloppy programmin IMHO )

Check Program Files for remaining Folders of Norton/Symantec

Run CCLeaner to remove both temps and run a Registry cleanup too, dont just run the reg cleanup once, do it a few times as it will find more unused keys.

If Vista's inbuilt update fails to update what error message do you get? check against these or type the error into the search box at top of page http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

*you won't be able to use Microsoft/Windows Online update sites as these are not enabled for Vista, Vista's only route for now is the inbuilt updater.

i did everything you said , still cannot update or go on windows live messenger.

My error code for windows update is : 80072EE2

and the code for windows live messenger: 81000306

Cannot check the code on a microsoft website because the computer cannot go on ANY microsoft website... just doesnt load.

I tryied searched upon solutions for windows live messenger and came across some disable autotuning level through cmd and it still dint work.

Any ideals?

I'm pasting what the windows update error is showing at MS because you can't get there to read it.
The steps I think you've done, I won't post any details.

Home users or users who are not behind a proxy server
Step 1: Verify Internet connectivity
Step 2: Verify your personal firewall program settings
The Windows Update client and the Microsoft Update client run in an instance of Svchost.exe. This Svchost.exe instance requires access to the Internet.
Step 3: Disable software accelerator programs
Disable any software accelerator programs. Examples of these programs are file download accelerators and internet speed accelerators.
Step 4: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list
Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone check box.
5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, clicking Add after you type each address:
• http://update.microsoft.com
• http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
6. Click OK two times.

Step 5: Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file
Some programs may modify the hosts file to control DNS name resolution. Sometimes, an entry for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site may exist in the hosts file. To remove these entries from the hosts file, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, and then click OK.
Note If you are prompted to choose a program to open the hosts file with, click Notepad, click to select the Always use the selected program option, and then click OK.
2. In Notepad, configure any lines in the hosts file that contain entries for Windows Update so that they are not read when the file is accessed. To do this, place the number sign (#) in front of any line that contains "microsoft" and "update." For example, add the number sign (#) to the beginning of the following entries:
• # 64.4.21.125 http://update.microsoft.com
• # 64.4.21.125 http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
3. Remove any lines that contain entries for Windows Update or for Microsoft Update. For example, remove the following entry if the entry exists:
http://update.microsoft.com
4. On the File menu, click Save.
5. Exit Notepad.
6. Restart the computer.
Note If you do not want to restart the computer, you can also flush the DNS resolver cache. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.

Step 6: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration
If you are not located in a corporate network, or if you do not use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, clear the WinHTTP proxy configuration. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
4. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box, click to select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
a. proxycfg -d
b. net stop wuauserv
c. net start wuauserv
d. exit

did everything.. still nothing. I cant update , go on messenger or any microsoft site still ! :cry

i found this solution on google

I have worked on this problem for at least 20 hours on and off over the last
several weeks.
I have a pc which uses ICS to connect all the clients in my home network to
the internet. WU would not work on either client. Kept getting 80072ee2
failure when searching for updates. Tried every solution I could find on the
internet.

Finally I added up all the symptoms, one of which that I could not load
other https pages, could not even reach the windows update site without using
the proxy. Well, I decided the problem could be the ethernet connection from
the ICS Host to the home network.

Removed the ethernet device from within device manager, rebooted and let XP
home reinstall the device. After that, the clients could run Windows Update.

sheesh, what a hassle figuring this out was.

Anyhow, if anyone gets the 8072ee2 error and you've tried the other
solutions, try what I did. I'm thinking that there was a problem with dropped
packets or tcp/ip communication.

his problem seems to be alot like mine .. i went to device manager but not sure which ethernet device to remove.

honestly this problem is so anoying im willing to try anything.

BUMP ,

still cant go on any microsoft websites , msn messenger doesnt work , cannot update etc..

i can log into messenger service through Ebuddy but i dont like doing that and rather have the real thing.

Please help

I found this "final" fix to the 81000306 problem i get but even after reading all the post and responds saying wow this works etc.. it hasnt done anything to help me because my problem continues.

the solution is netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled , typing that into cmd while using admistrator and then restarting but that DID NOT help me.

So im still open to solutions
