I've Windows XP SP1 in ny system. When I insert Windows XP SP2 Cd and try to upgrade to SP2, it works well well until the restart. Then I get a blank screen saying "akmyhhx0.sys is missing". And the installation quits from then. Please help!

Sounds like a corrupt cd - download SP2 from here instead of using the cd and see what happens.

SP2 is sensitive to spyware, and suffers if it is installed while you are updating. When nobody can find a file that is missing, with such a seemingly random name--doesn't sound very legit.

We have a procedure here for you to follow in these cases.
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=664939&postcount=2

Please follow it to the letter and get back with us with the results. If you still have issues, we may need to move your thread to the malware forum.

    Hi auzziez,

We are finished with CounterSpy now. Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall Sunbelt Counterspy and these old Java versions:

    - Sunbelt CounterSpy
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Then delete the below folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Aashish\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

After you've completed the uninstall for all of the above and deleted the Sunbelt folders, please REBOOT and install Java Runtime Environment vs. 6.2

Also there's an update 12 for your J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 11.

It's difficult to get SP2 onto a computer with malware problems. There are a few things to take care of. I'll get back to you after awhile.

    Hi auzziez!

    1) Try turning Zone Alarm off when you uninstall the old Java versions and install the new one. You must reboot between uninstalling the old versions and installing the new version. When you reboot Zone Alarm will be turned back on. Please turn it back off. If the newfiles log you posted to me is the new one, you still have the following old versions of Java on your computer:

    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

After you reboot please turn off ZoneAlarm again (by right-clicking on the ZA icon in the lower right hand corner and clicking on Shut down ZoneAlarm, confirm, and then install Java Runtime Environment vs. 6.2

Let me know if this works. Your operating system is okay for this Java, so I'm not sure why it's rejecting the install.

    2) Now I want you to scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )
Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

    3) Please delete the following file:
    4) Did you configure the below policy:
    5) After you have completed all of the above, please attach a fresh log for ShowNew (newfiles.txt), GetRunKeys (runkeys.txt) and analyse.exe (hijackthis.log). Let us know how it went and how your computer is running now.
    • newfiles.txt
    • runkeys.txt

    Hi abri!!

    1) I uninstalled
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
then REBOOTED, SHUTDOWN ZONE ALARM and then installed Java Runtime Enviroment 6.2
Got the same old warning, but I could continue installation. It only said that for the best effect of JRE v6.2, I should have Windows XP SP2, which obviously I dont have. So i installed JRE v6.2.

    2) Then I run HijachThis(analyse.exe) and fixed
    3) Deleted the following file:
    4) As far as the policy given below is concerned, I have no idea about it. I rarely play with Registries. So no question of configuring the below policy.
5)I have attached the new log files.

Apart from this I am concerned about some entries (related to RapidDown) in the HijackThis log. Can you please make a check of them.

    Regards,
    Auzziez.

    Hi auzziez!

    Sorry this took awhile!

The two 09 Rapidown entries in HijackThis can be fixed, but they don't need to be. They are deactivated files. Generally I don't fix things which don't have to be fixed. Are you still using Rapidown?

Please do the final instructions below:

    1) Please copy the bold text below (including the word REGEDIT4) to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    3) After you have completed the above, please attach a fresh newfiles log

    4) In the following box is a set of instructions to clean out the logs, files and tools that we used to clean your computer. Make sure you run the ShowNew (newfiles.txt) before you delete the program. Some of the problems you were having installing SP2 may be resolved now. Be sure to set a fresh restore point as per the instructions in the box below. In case SP2 causes problems, you will have a clean recovery point to return to. You've had some different problems with your uninstalls. Hopefully these are cleared up now and you will not meet with further problems getting SP2 onto your computer.

Please post back that one newfiles.txt log so I can make sure the registry value got deleted and let me know how everything goes!

    Hi auzziez,
Did you uninstall Rapidown when you quit using it?

You have a lot of temporary files that don't get deleted.. Are you running ATF according to the instructions for your computer?

Also, I forgot to ask you for a fresh runkeys log. I'd be grateful if you could post this for me and I will try and figure out why you are still having all those temp files. They should be gone.

    Thanks!

    Hi abri,
When i wanted to uninstall RapidDown, I found no entry of it in "Add/Remove Program". Nor could i uninsall it through CCleaner(no entry in it again!). So I thought it was already uninstalled and that it had left junk files in the C:\Program Files\RapiiDown folder. Hence I just deleted the folder.
I think i had made some mistake while executing ATF Cleaner. By the way, here are the new log files:

    Hi auzziez!

    That looks better!! :)

Please make sure, before you continue on with the installation for SP2, that you've run our final instructions in the box at the bottom of post 12 for wiping out your previous restore points and setting a new one. I have a question about your installation of SP2. Normally, if you have XP-SP1, you just go to the MS website and download SP2. Since you have the other Windows updates for your computer, SP2 should either have come on automatically, or it should have been offered to you via the updates program. Why are you trying to get SP2 with a CD?
Here is a set of instructions from Microsoft for preparing your computer for SP2. I think you've done most of these steps already, but you may still need something from your computer manufacturer. Take a look at this:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

This is for your system requirements:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sysreqs.mspx

And this is a more extensive article about the actual installation steps for SP2:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/russel_installsp2.mspx

The error message you got when you first tried to install SP2 refers to a file which is unknown. Try installing SP2 online. It is not a lengthy install. If it causes any problems for your computer, simply back up to the clean restore point you've set according to our instructions.

Let me know how things turn out!

    Hi abri!
I actually got SP2 Update during Windows Automatic Update. It was like this:
I have a 256kbps connection with 1Gb download limit. So i didn't want to waste my download usage on SP2. Hence i tried to get a CD which could prova handy anytime. Anyways, I've decided to install SP2 from Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates.
    Thanks for the Help.
    Regards,
    Auzziez.
