    I have a friend's laptop here that is at this point quite disabled. The desktop icons disappear and reappear, the only way to get to a program is through the task manager. IE will launch, but majorgeeks is not available. I tried to download the latest java client, but it's blocked that as well. I tried to install Spybot from my flash drive, that's blocked as well. I had gotten the desktop stabilized by disabling a dll file, but that's back now. I'm giong to have a difficult time getting this running again unless I can find out what to disable. I cannot run Superantispyware; "has encountered a problem and must close." Trying to run it from my flash drive. Spybot "cannot contact the server." Malware bytes installer won't launch at all. Combofix installer won't run. MG tools ran. But I can't get the logs onto my flash drive. I'll keep trying to figure out a way. Safe mode is no better, and several programs say the administrator's policies have kept something from installing--that was the case with java. HELP!

    This particular friend has Duchenne's muscular distrophy, and this laptop is a source of much communication and enjoyment for him. The parents could never afford to take the laptop to the shop and pay a couple of hundred dollars for a cleanup. Any help is going to be much appreciated.

    I have the majorgeeks tools logs, the unkeys, etc. I was able to drop to a command prompt and copy them. Not so lucky with the zip file.

    Avast is reporting a rootkit.

    First, you are using a very old version of MGTools. You need to delete all of it and download the newest version in the Read and Run First Instructions.

    If you can not do these fixes, try doing it in safe mode.

    Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 4"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    SpywareStop ---> rogue program!

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following ( be sure to re-enable when we are finished):

    Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    If you can download The Avenger by Swandog469, save it to your Desktop. (If not, you will have to manually remove these files.)

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:"
    part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now if you were able to delete the old java files, please download and install:
    Java Runtime

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Now run the new version of C:\MGtools.exe file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.
