I've somehow lost my installation disc and I need to install my camera on my new computer. I looked on e-bay, but I didn't see any disc. I also went to http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppo...a_series/powershot_a590_is#DriversAndSoftware
but I'm not exactly sure what to download from there.

    Should I download
    Drivers
    Software
    Utilities
    Firmware
or all 4? Please take pity on me - this is all Greek to me! :cry (Yes, I know I'm pathetic, but that's exactly how I feel.)

    Hi :)

The biggest thing are the Drivers so you can hook up your camera to download your photos onto your computer. That is required.

Typically, most people download the software as well because it usually has the Manufacturers picture viewer. In the case of your specific camera, the software does, in fact, include the Image Browser. You do not have to install this if you don't want to, you can always view your pictures in Windows. It's up to you.

There is nothing under the Utilities, so don't worry. The Firmware is for your camera. I wouldn't do anything with that unless you are having problems with it.

Thank you! I am so grateful! I will do this tonight and FINALLY be able to use my camera again.

Without the install disk the software won't install. Not sure about the drivers, but any recent OS should be able to recognize the camera. If not most people just use a card reader for the memory card. It makes life so much easier and is faster transfer as well.

There is a way of getting around the "no disk" issue. I've read you can edit the registry (something I don't normally advise people to do since you can screw things up) or you can use the software disk from another Canon camera, then download the latest software. If you go that route you don't even need to install the software from another camera, but when the install of the update asks to verify you put the disk in the drive, it verifies and off you go. If nothing else contacting Canon can get you another disk for around $15 US Dollars.

According to this there's no drivers required for any of the newer MS or OSX OSs.

cabbiinc caught what I didn't. For whatever reason, there isn't any downloads for your camera...I'm not familiar with Canon models, so am not sure why they would not have to download on their site.

    Sorry for overlooking that.:(

Edited to add: Have you tried just plugging your camera in? What Operating System are you using (XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc)?

Yes, I've discovered that this is all waaaay too advanced for my pitiful skills, so I think the best thing is to order the disc directly from Canon. I'm glad to know that's an option. Thank you both so much for all your help!

    Hi...you may not have to.

Again, if you have a recent Windows operating system, you should just be able to plug your camera in and it'll find the driver. Have you tried doing that?

Yes, and it was asking me to insert my Windows XP disc (I don't have one because the system came on my computer) and do lots and lots of other things too. I admit it; I gave up and ordered the disc. It goes against my cheapskate nature, but . . . I wimped out. What can I say? Thanks again for your help!
