Cant access internet with sharing enabled

I am running windows ME on my main PC and XP on a laptop,
Having run the Network wizard on both I have tried to access the Internet with the main PC but I am only able to do so with Connection Sharing disabled,
Also when connecting the two together using PCI cards they don’t seem to be visible.
Am I missing something or just being stupid?

Any help would be appreciated if only to stop my son (its his laptop) Moaning.
