Hi, here is my problem. my son ran some spyware anti virus removal software. it find some, not sure what, but once it cleaned the infections, I could not connect to the internet. it just keeps trying to acqiure my ip address. I looked under my device manager and found a yellow trangle on the netbios tp over tcip section. ive tried a couple of different things including ipconfig and winsock, nothing has worked. I'am running windows xp, really trying to avoid reloading xp back on my system. any help would be appreciated.

What is the error code shown when you open that item?

When I click on net bios over tcpip, it gives an error code 24(Device not present ,is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.) when i go into the driver properties, the status is stopped.when i try to start it, it cannot find the file specified.

I would suggest that you should re-install your network cards driver.....

Start > search> type... Device Manager> on the next screen locate where your Network Adapters are listed and expand the tree.. in the tree you will see the adapter hardware you have installed > select the hardware by rightclicking and choosing *update driver*... follow the on screen prompts clicking OK / YES and allow for windows to try and find/fix for you. Let me know if it does not find a driver/or if it says there is nothing wrong with the driver thats installed.

Are you using an ethernet/wireless/or both ?? can I also have this information if you require further assistance....

please could you also run everest ..... http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Add the report in your next post like this.....

This will give me the info that I need to gather your Drivers.

Also as you have found malware/infection i would strongly suggest this....

Please read and follow the following READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and once finished please start a new thread in the Malware Forum plus a guide on how to attach the logs HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Have you tried to release and renew your IP?

I would try that. If you have XP or Win 7, go to start, and type in cmd, then type, ipconfig /release then type ipconfig /renew and let it go through the motions and then see if you've acquired a IP address now

Hey Teekan, tried your suggestion, but when I entered the command to release, it responded that it was already released. When I entered renew, it gave me an error message "errror occured while renewing interface local area connection the RPC server is unavailable.

Hey IAINT.t. When I tried to let windows fix the problem, it basically said that it couldnt find a better driver than what was installed. Also, when I go into the device manager, the network adapter seems to be running fine, but when I click on show hidden devices and look under non-plug and play drivers>Netbios over Tcpip has a yellow !. When I click on it, it tells me that the device is not present ,is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed(code 24). Also, I have the computer hooked up to both ethernet and wireless and I have tried running the ethernet cable straight from my cable router to the computer, same issue. The info you requested is attached. Thanks

    Hi

If you have cleaned up some malware from your PC, its very possible that some of your drivers are corrupt or faulting so I would try to re-install your Chipset driver HERE and reboot(do reboot as its crucial to installing properly) then install your network driver HERE and reboot and test.

Also do boot into safe mode (F8) and choose safe mode with networking and see if your internet works as this may help us narrow down something else as the cause.

Hey DavidGP, I tried your suggestions and I am still having the same issue. Even in safe mode. Could this be a hardware issue?

    Greetings, goinss...

Could be. Network cards are cheap (as are wireless adapters), so a quick replacement might be a fix. If the hardware is not the problem you'll have a spare on hand.

First, though, try this: run services.msc and check if the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running and set to Automatic.

Also, did you go through the Malware Removal steps as suggested by iain.t? There are some infections that present symptoms such as yours.
