Can't boot normally into XP Pro

I don't know if I am posting this to the correct forum.

When I boot normally into XP Pro sp2 I get a dash in the upper left corner of the screen.

I can boot into the XP CD and get to the recovery console. When I run
Chkdsk /R
Fixmbr
It will boot into windows once. The next time I try to boot into windows I get he dash in the upper left corner of the screen.

I have tried repairing the boot up by doing the following.

• C: CD ..
• C: ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
• C:ATTRIB -S C:\\boot.ini
• C:ATRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
• C: del boot.ini
• C: BOOTCFG /Rebuild
• C: CHKDSK /R
• C: FIXBOOT

After that it wouldn't boot. It seems like I must do a Fixmbr in order for it to boot.

When Chkdsk /R runs it does say it fixed something.

I have updated all the following programs and run them.

CA Antivirus
Spybot 1.52
AD-Aware 2007 pro
SuperAntiVirus
Norton Disk Doctor (with Fix errors checked)

Any ideas?

I ran sfc /scannow.

I ran BootMaster. It found a problem. "MFT is damaged"

If that is true I don't understand:
1. Why Norton Disk Doctor didn't catch it.
2. Why Chkdsk doesn't repair it.
3. Why Fixmbr does make it boot once correctly but not a second time after windows starts up.

I'm guessing there is something in XP that is wiping out the mbr when it comes up.

This is running on an IBM Thinkpad A31p.

What can I do to fix it?
