I have a Emachines computer and run Windows XP home with service pack 2 installed.
I started to burn to disk some songs from my harddrive. In Nero, it starts to burn and then it stops and a message comes up that says "stopped burning at 24x. I selected 24 after it didn't burn at 48, which it is supposed to do. I then tried to burn with Music Match and it started to burn and then stopped and a message says that " the drive has reported a hardware failure and a bad disk could be the cause." I've tried several disk and also tried windows media and real player to burn but nothing works. Could someone help. I don't know where to start. Could it be the drive needs a new driver? The drive plays disks and DVDs. Burning is the only problem that I have. Thanks for any help you can give me.

What version of Nero is it?

Personal experience has taught me to be wary of disk quality when you purchase them. I once wasted four cheap disks before tossing them and trying again with better quality disks. I have yet to waste anymore. I hope this is helpful. Good luck with it.

Thanks for your responce. When I first tried to burn with Nero and after it failed, message said that I should upgrade, so I upgraded to the latest burner. I beleive that it is 6-0-6. Do you beleive that there could be that many bad disks in one batch like the other responder suggests? I've used Memorex ever since I have been burning disk and I have never had any problems with them.
    Thanks again.

It could be any of those things.

I would also check and make sure you have DMA enabled.

Run the Nero Info Tool, that will tell you if there are any problems. It's in the Nero Toolkit.

followed your advice and checked out Nero Tool Box. Everything checked out just fine. Could find nothing wrong. I thought maybe that the file that I was trying to burn may be damaged so tried to burn different files but nothing seems to help. Sure wish that I could solve this problem. Thanks for responding.

Have you checked the Nero log for any errors, or does it give you any error messages?

Exactly what steps are you taking, and what happens?

I have run out of ideas. I remembered that I have had some problems with Music Match Jukebox10 , so I uninstalled it and download an earlier version. It went through the entire process and I thought I had solved my problem, but the disk wouldn't play. I went to Nero's tools and ran a sample disk. A message informed me that "This drive does not seem to be able to write CD text". Also in tools, I I clicked ASPI and a message at the bottom of the page said "System ASPI is not installed". I clicked in a small box and it listed System and Nero. I clicked Nero and the message changed to "Nero ASPI is installed and working properly". I closed this out and went back to Nero and tried again to burn a disk, but it failed. In System-Devices I clicked ASPI and found a note that said that "ASPI is not installed and not needed". So, I just don't know what to do. Again, this is not just a Nero problem. None of my burners work properly. And the drive plays CDs and DVD with no problems, so, if it is a hardware problem, how do I find and fix it? Thanks for listening and would like to hear any ideas you might have. I also tried to find something at Microsoft, but I couldn't find anything that made sense to me.

We can't help if you don't follow or respond to our suggestions.

Sorry, but I was just answering the questions that you ask. I don't know what else I could have told you.

    Hey red:
If you have RW's, try using one of them to burn a very small file...like an MS word file. That way you'll know if it's a file size issue. Also, if the burn fails, you haven't wasted a disc. Also, try turning DMA OFF...I don't really know why, but sometimes that seems to help. Last but not least, make sure you have buffer under-run checked. If none of this works, this one FREE program called "burn4free" is a very simple, utilitarian burning software that has never given me a problem....try that, cause memorex discs are pretty good, and if your files are good...i can only hope that there's nothing wrong w/ your hardware... Good luck, dude.

There's numerous free CD burning programs that are free, do a better job than Burn4Free, and have no spyware from the start. I can't see endorsing anything that has any spyware connections whatsoever, but if you're happy with it, more power to ya ;)

    That's not the point.

Why bother or take the risk when there are plenty of great free programs like CDBurnerXP that we have here?

No idea, I downloaded it about 2 years ago and it wanted to install something called WhenU, which is notorious spyware. So I didn't install it.
