So, I'm trying to do an error check on my C drive (via Properties>>Tools>>Check Now (in the "Error-checking" section) and I get a message that "The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed only by restarting Windows."

I've tried to restart Windows a few times, but I keep getting the same error message. Am I in a catch-22 situation? Any suggestions on how to fix this problem and successfully do the Disk Check?

Start / Run / type: sfc /scannow ...be prepared to put in your cd ....after it is done...reboot and see if it will do a disc check ....:)
