I am definitely not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to computer technical problems so please forgive any pig ignorance I display! I have read the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and have reached the Panda ActiveScan but cannot get it to scan Local Disks. I get a message in the bottom left hand corner of the scan pop-up saying there is an error on the page. Since I spent the whole of yesterday getting this far, I'm extremely frustrated! If anyone can advise, would be very grateful.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Did you uninstall ALL old Sun Java versions and update to the new version as specified in step 6 of the READ & RUN ME? If yes, and you still cannot run Panda then skip it and continue with the remaining steps.

Thanks for your reply, chaslang, and apologies for delay replying - assume it's down to time zone difference between UK and US. Yes, I did uninstall and update old Java. Or at least I think I did!

You're welcome. We will find out when you attach all of the required logs except Panda since you could not runn it. ;)

Sorry, meant to say that all I have on Control Panel Add or Remove Programmes is Java SE Runtime Environment 6.

    dumb question re installing HijackThis

As I mentioned before, when it comes to tinkering with computer innards, I'm pretty dumb! I'm fairlysure what I've done is ok but your warnings about unzipping and installing HijackThis in the wrong location are pretty scary. I have not followed your instructions for either creating a C:\Program Files\HJT folder or unzipping HijackThis into it simply because following your instructions did not produce the sort of responses your instructions suggest. I do, however, have an unzipped HijackThis.exe in an HJT folder in C:\Program Files! I am aware I must rename it but first things first. Sorry to be a pain!

Re: dumb question re installing HijackThis

If you downloaded HijackThis from the link we provided, you would get a self extracting executable program that would by default make a correct folder and put HijackThis.exe in the folder. All you would have to do is click the button namad Unzip. You would get:

    C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

And then to comply with our requirements for renaming the executable, all you would have to do is rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe

Please stay in one thread for your current malware problems. I merged you back to your previous thread.
