Hi Everyone, My nephews computer is acting up went through the malware steps, it's clean and was told to come over here by Chaslang :) It is an Acer Aspire Laptop 64 bit running Windows 7. It will download the windows updates but upon restart it hangs at 35%, then when trying to reverse it it won't finish? forcing me to do a system restore. Also when trying to go into control panel windows explorer crashes and has to refresh... Avira is notworking as well... I have tried disabling all third party shell extensions (as suggested from another thread) but that did nothing. Gunna uninstall and re install Avira right now.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Use AppRemover to see what security programs are installed and then remove all but one antivirus, http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/appremover.html
Then reboot. Disable the antivirus and try to download a few updates (not all) and see if those few install. Reboot and try a few more, keeping the av off each time you download and install the updates.

Hi thank you for your help. I ran App remover and alls it found was Avira and the Ask Toolbar. I removed both and tried doing updates but it is still hanging on reboot :( control panel is still causing windows explorer to crash as well. I haven't reinstalled Avira yet.

JUST A NOTE: Tried running sfc/scannow from cmd and it will not finish it stops at 43% and says Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I would go to a differnt user profile if possible. there's a chance the usual one is corrupted. is your root/admin profile alive? try there.
if everything comes up ok and you're able to get stuff done, you can always move all the user data to a new fresh profile and nuke the old

what shows up in the event log?

Ok here is the Admin Event log. Hopefully you can open it? Tons of errors and warnings. Unfortunately he doesn't have another User profile.. When in safemode There is an option to go into 2 user profiles. The one being his and one called "Homegroup". Is this what you mean by root/admin profile? If so Could I create a new User from there?

Totally disregard my last post. I don't know what I was thinking..... There is no other user profile in safe mode... And I can't upload the Event log as it is in the wrong format... Sorry been a long day lol.
