Can't download mails

When I try to download e-mail with Netscape 7.2 (my default e-mail client) it just writes "Connected to server pop.<servername>...." and freezes without downloading any mail.
I tried to configure Outlook and Outlook Express but they weren't able to do either, the first reporting errors from the servers (for two different accounts).
Additionally every time I do this my comp (OS Windows XP Pro SP1) won't shut down or restart because it cannot close ccapp.exe (part of Norton I think).
Anyone can help?

Sounds like Norton is trying to scan your email coming in from your different Pop programs but is not configured properly, therefore....lock up. This could be for several reasons. Are you using an SSL connection to your server? Or does your server require an Authentification on SMTP? If so that could be your issue. I don't know what Norton product you have, ie.. firewall, antivirus, Suite, but try and disable it and then connect to your POP server. If it goes through then that was it and I have a pretty good suspision that is your problem. Though I have been known to be wrong. (lol) At that point I would go to the Norton support site and figure out how to configure it to work with your POP program.

Actually I thought so too so I tried to disable Norton but still I can't download the mails.
And the pop worked correctly until a few days ago while the configuration of Norton (btw, it's Norton Internet Security 2005) doesn't seem changed at all.
