Can't enable System Restore in XP home

I went through the malware/virus system check recently and thought I saw where one of the procedures turns off system restore so you can't go back and re-infect your computer. I've also read where some viruses/malware disable your system restore. For whatever reason, I can't enable it. It says: system Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives.Please restart your computer and try again. I also have tried doing it in safe mode but it won't allow it to be done.

 

In an admin account go into the registry and see if the following values are present.

DisableConfig in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
DisableSR in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore

If present delete them. Reboot. If system restore still cannot be enabled then:

Open the C:\Windows\inf folder and find sr.inf
Right click and select install.

Note: Windows may prompt for an installation path. Use the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles folder
If you do not have this folder than you will need a XP install disk with the same SP you are using.

 

I finally got it enabled, I had to disable my anti spyware and my firewall in order to do it. I'm still going to do what you suggested though.
