    Hi -

I had a bit of a processor debacle here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=257630&referrerid=262271

At one point during above issue I thought I had the processor properly seated but didn't and turned on the computer. A lot of loud noise from the fan but nothing else before I realized it was in wrong. Turned computer off and seated it properly. Now, I can boot computer but it will only recognize two of the four memory slots at a time.

    1. I tested all four of my 1GB RAM modules individually by placing each one in slot 1 and turning on the machine. The machine booted with 1GB of RAM each time.

    2. When I put in a pair of modules in slots 2 and 4, the computer will boot with 2GB of RAM and the BIOS shows the RAM in those slots.

    3. However, when I then try to fill slots 1 and 3 with modules, the BIOS tells me that it only sees RAM in slots 1 and 3 and slots 2 and 4 show up empty. I can't boot the system at all until I take out EITHER the modules in 2 and 4 OR the modules in slots 1 and 3.

Is there any way to fix this so I can get all 4 of my 1GB modules in there again? My system only allows for 1GB max per slot and its running Windows 7 so 2GB isn't really enough.

    Thanks for any insight!

hello try to loose the timings of the memory in the bios
when you have all 4 channels it streess the memory controller so you can not get that tight timings set command rate to 2t not 1t
also put the worse dimm in slot 1 which usually is the slot that the computer the ram characteristics.
    good luck
try also fill slot 1,3 ,4 maybe slot 2 is gone wrong

What is the make and model of the mainboard? There are some Intel boards (945 chipset for sure) that have a 3gb hardware limit. I have understood that adding more RAM does not cause a problem, the memory controller just can't map it.

Thanks for the advice guys but no dice. All 4 slots worked before and now no matter what I do only two will work. I'll just have to make do with 2GB of RAM until I can get a new computer!
