A bunch of people are having the same issues .... and the only suggestion I've given if you can't get into safe mode is to first try "last good configuration" when trying to boot up (f8), and if that doesn't work, do a repair installation. Then ....if it boots up, go to the malware section and do everything that is suggested. Will direct you if you don't know how to do a repair installation. Post back.

Most common problem that I have heard about getting into "Safe Mode" has been, that: You have to just keep tapping the F8 right from powerup, most keyboards only send out one signal per tap, so holding the key down does not work. Once you have gone to the "Logon Screen" it is to late.

Hope that helps, if not more knowledgeable Geeks will be by shortly to help

Misunderstanding .... so it works, some, just shuts down randomly? Then you need to turn off the auto reboot (right click my computer / properties / advanced / startup and recovery and uncheck the auto restart in system failure.) Then, if you would, go to control panel, administrative tools and event viewer and check the event logs for both applications and system .... let us know what you find. Unchecking the auto restart will probably dump you into a BSOD the next time it happens .... write it all down and post it.

i cant get to any start up and recovery things i right click go properties then advanced and any option that is there is greyed out not only that theres no start up or recovery options and auto restart in system failure isnt there either

where abouts am i meant to be right clicking on the my computer icon or thru explorer or something coz if i right click it only comes up wid short cut properties and ur general properties when u right click on an icon and even the adavnaced tab on the general properties theres no start up or recovery option either by the way im using XP home if that has any relevence

also if you would like me to post a picture of what im talking about just ask

i dont have time to log in at all before it reboots it self i get to the log in screen and weather i choose to log in as admin or my own login as im typing the password for either one it just reboots as if ive reached over right in the middle and presed the reset button ive done virus scan after virus scan reckons the computer is clean ive done spyware scan after spyware scan with multiple scanners still doesnt fix anything i cant think what on earth could be causing this and formatting isnt reall an option at the moment '
as i dont wanna back up anything that could be causing this problem only ot have it happen again when i put all my stuff back on after a reboot would a repair installation fix this ?? and with a repair installation ( i know i should know this lol ) will i loose anytihng besides system settings and drivers and stuff like that ?? oh thats another reason i havent formated coz ive lost my driver cd

oh just realised how to get to thoes recovery options and such had to go thru control panel then system then advanced and blah blah any way auto reboot in system failure is not checked and when it reboots in safe mode i dont get the dreaded BSOD it just reboots as if i presed the reset button

Repair installation will keep all you files and settings, except for updates, which ou'll have to re-download (auto update, if you want) .... put the xp cd in the drive, boot up and choose boot from cd..press any key .... it will load some files, it will ask if you want to install or go to recovery console .... enter to install .... will go to agreement screen (f8 to agree), then it will look for any "previous versions of windows" .... when it finds xp, it will ask if you want to "repair" or new install .... hit "R" to repair .... let her rip ...it will look like a complete new installation .... but it will just be a repair and all your stuff will still be there.
Post back..... and when done with the repair, go to the malware section and run all the stuff in read this first .... post back..

It's a long-shot but worth checking. Do you have Nero installed? If so, disable InCD and see if safe mode works.

Since we're having so much fun .... try start/run and type sfc /scannow (put the xp cd in the drive first and just exit the set up screen.... ) then hit enter and see if that works.

OK. Just wanted to make sure, spyware can cause that alot of times with both of them. I think you should go thru the steps in spyware and start a thread there regardless of what we solve here. Maybe something will work.

One more option that might work for you. Download Startup Inspector for Windows, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075

You can disable InCD from there. Been a long time since I have used it but it's pretty straight forward and easy to use.

Do you have anything Nero starting that you can disable? If not, that's probably not it then.

    Don't stop now.........got any ideas?

You should be able to uninstall InCD from Add/Remove in the control panel but since we don't know for sure if that is it, I will leave that up to you. It may not change anything.

i did what timw sugessted but i havent checked to see if thats worked yet

add remove programs GGGRR why didnt i think of that yeah its in there but what the hell does inCD do any way ??

  35. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

InCD enables you to drag files onto a CD-R directly from Windows Explorer, or to save onto CD directly from within applications like Microsoft Word, without using the CD Recording software that came with your CD-Writer.

If you never use it just uninstall it. Another thing you might try if you don't want to remove it is make sure that Nero and InCD are fully updated, see if that helps.

ahh ok thanx well ive uninstalled it asked me to reboot but im not goin to just yet coz im downloadin some stuff that i need

any way just so yas all know im using winXP home edition could that be why msconfig wont run or ??

also tim with sfc /scannow when its finished and it does find a discrepency in the system files does it tell you at all or does it just go about its buisness with out you even knowing if sumthing was corrupt ??

  37. MaGGoT_corps7

    MaGGoT_corps7 Private E-2

ok got some updates for yas

    1 sfc /scannow didnt work

    2 neither did uninstalling inCD

but when i did boot into safe mode when it goes thru loading the drivers and stuff it came up saying press esc to stop loading stpd or something soo i pressed cancel and it still didnt work and i sware ive let it load before and still didnt work

  38. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

I have no idea at this point. I really thought that removing InCD would let you get to safe mode. stpd might be associated with Alcohol 120% and Daemon tools. I don't know much about these.

Maybe, see how far you can get going thru the Spyware steps. If you can't finish or perform some of the tasks that's ok, they can deal with that as long as they know you took the proper steps.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance. I hope one of the other members has some ideas at this point.

I had a similar problem lately. I'll bet that you are hanking in a file called MUP.SYS

If so, an improper flash of your bios may have been the cause.

You said earlier that you could get into regedit. If you still are at square one, and can get to the registry editor, there's hope.

In the meantime, can you get to webroot.com?
