Can't get Mozilla FF 1.0.7 extensions

Due to recent internet problems, I upgraded FF to the recommended 1.0.7. However, when I try to get more extension (via Tools) it says that I need to upgrade to 1.0.7 even though I already did (twice). I googled the extensions with no luck. It seems that Mozilla doesn't acknowledge that I have the proper upgrade to obtain extensions. Any suggestions? Thanks, Stephanie

    Hey Halo!

I was wondering where you were :) Thanks for this. I'll upgrade again.

    SRBast,

A flash of the blindingly obvious, but I was on FF 1.0.7 until I upgraded to 1.5, and I used to leave the "allow websites to download software box" unchecked, which stops extensions downloading.

They've done away with this feature in 1.5, but if you upgrade with the box unchecked, the setting will carry over into 1.5 which hasn't got a direct method to unlock the download feature - you have to go into about:config to unlock it and allow you to download or update extensions.

    Hey W.,
I'd like to check this out - but I don't understand what "about:config" means. The only "about" I can find is "About Mozilla FF" in the HELP section. Let me know when you get a chance. Thanks! Stephanie

Scroll down to Known issues, All systems here http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/1.5.html type in "xpi" in filter box at about:config

Best to make new profile for 1.5 so you avoid any conflicts with old extensions. Most worth using are compatible by now so not a problem if you start from scratch.

Type "about:config" in the address bar if you are using 1.0.7, if you are using 1.5 it should be in the help menu.

I think the above two posts pretty well explain it, although I'm actually on FF 1.5 and I don't have it in the "Help" menu like Star17's screengrab shows.

about:config in the address bar gives you acces to Firefox's "innards". To solve the download problem, if you find that FF 1.5 tells you that software downloads are disabled, type "about:config" in the address bar (no quotes) and hit enter. Scroll down to "xpinstall.enabled", right click on it, and select "reset" from the menu . The font will change from bold to normal, restart FF and you'll be downloading in no time.

First of all, thanks to everyone here. I was able to reset my xpi install and I can download. Now what I need help with is making a new profile. How do I do that? I can download the extensions now, but 9 out of 10 say they're not compatible with ver.1.5. So I figure I need to do this. Thanks for you information :) Stephanie

    Steph,

I think you have two different issues. Making a new profile will not make your extensions compatible with 1.5 - that relies on the extension writers updating the code to be compatible with v1.5. I suggest you try visiting the website of the developer of each extension (there's usually a link on the FF Extensions page) to see if they have a later, updated version for direct download.

The profile is basically all your settings, bookmarks and extensions. If FF starts giving problems, the first advice is usually to create a new profile, as the files can get slightly corrupted over time. The only problem is you won't have your bookmarks, extensions, etc - it'll be as if you are new to FF. You can export and re-import your bookmarks into your new profile.

I kept my 1.0.7 profiles into FF 1.5 and I haven't noticed any issues. All my extensions bar one automatically updated from the "Find Updates" button in the Extensions menu. The other I got from the developer's site. I don't use Themes, so have no experience of these.

To create a new profile, I got the following from the Firefox help page http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile

    1. Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
    2. Select Start > Run... from the Windows Start menu.
    3. Enter firefox.exe -profilemanager and press OK.

This will give you a small window, where you can select to create a new profile. You can also select to show this window every time you start FF, so you can select which profile to start. You can have different profiles for different purposes.

    Hope this helps

    Paul

Thanks, Paul. This helps a lot. I don't think that my browser is behaving poorly at all, but I'll keep this info. for future use should I need it. What I miss most is SuperDragNGo. I'll see if they have an update. Thanks so much! Stephanie

Oh my gosh! You were right, Paul. If I go to the author's homesite and download there, it works (re: SuperDragnGo) So so happy :)

You can restore much more than the bookmarks from an old profile to a new one, see: http://the-edmeister.home.comcast.net/tips-html/tips-restoring_your_browsing_data.html

That page hasn't yet been updated for Firefox 1.5, in 1.5 you can transfer themes and extensions as well. Just make sure you don't move whatever caused the problems into the new one.:)

This is why I haven't made the change over to the new FF yet.
I tried 1.5 in the first official week of release and it caused problems.
Thankfully I kept 1.0.7 install file and reinstalled it.
There are a couple of extensions that I still don't think have been upgraded to 1.5.
I'll hold out a bit longer.
    Love my 1.0.7.
