I have an older Dell (at least 7 years) Dimension XPS with Pentium III. Last night, everything was fine. Then I get an alert from Windows to do some updates. No problem. I install the updates, then it tells me to restart so the updates will take. So I do. NOW I cannot get on the Internet AT ALL. I tried through my ISP (Comcast), I tried Internet Explorer, I tried Netscape, no dice. I get the same error box "IEXPLORE.exe has generated an error and must close down" or something to that effect. Trouble is, I NEVER got to the Internet. This is on my home PC--I'm writing this at work. I ran CCCleaner, AdAware, SpyBot, and avast! and got rid of some little stuff, but after I rebooted (I even rebooted the modem), it was still happening. I'm now running a full virus scan with both Avast! and AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic. What else could be keeping me from getting online? Thanks in advance!

I would suggest you do a system restore to before the issues surfaced and then do our Read and Run First and attach the requested logs.

Can you please tell me how to do this, as I am a techno-newb and am not sure how to go about this? Thanks in advance!

Click on start ...accessories ...system tools ...system restore ...pick a date before you had problems and allow it to run ...when it reboots and you are back on line (hopefully) then start the

RE: "Click on start ...accessories ...system tools ...system restore .."

Well, here I am back at work--I went to do this simple little thing, and I couldn't! I have Windows 2000 Professional (I got this PC from my old job when they went out of business), and it doesn't have "system restore" under "system tools". :banghead

    Now what??? :cry

No..W2k does not have a system restore....can you download the utilities in the read and run first (counterspy, HJT...etc) and save them to a cd and then install on this machine?

    Lets also try this first:
Download this file - (save it to a disc and then copy to your w2k desktop) Combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then see if you can do any of the other scans and attach what logs you can.

I am glad to hear that things are running better ...however, I would be more confident if you would attach the scan logs as there are ofter left-over traces of malware after doing the scans.:)
