Cant get past log-on screen.. Win ME

Hey everyone,

I have recently aquired an old pc off my parents but the problem i am having is i cant get past the 'log on to windows' screen.. none of the passwords ( even the correct one) work, all i keep getting is a message 'the system could not log you on. make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. make sure that caps lock is not accidentally on.'
it doesnt give me the option to skip past it or cancel it or anything. i just cant get past the logon screen whatsoever!
i have tried doing searches on the web, closest i can come up with is a program called ERD Commander that could help me, as it looks like the program is designed for my problem, only other problem is the software is ridiculously expensive. ( as in 499 for a 7 day trial or 150 for a run once only version! :/
Does anyone have any ideas what i could do or suggestions for me to try? Im tearing my hair out here!!

Just don't enter a password, try that.

 

Tried that - tried entering nothing... a space.. every password and word i could think of..
