an ad for AD Protect downloaded on my computer that is now used as my background on desktop. I found where it was from properties and deleted it.
Then I ran AD-aware, Spy-bot, and symantec anti-virus and it is still my background. It is there after restarting as well. The ! symbol is also in the bottom right that I can not delete. Any Ideas??????

    Welcome to MG :)

We have alot of good tools on MG please complete the following tutitorial and see if that helps to clear up your problem if your problem still persists after completing the guide post back and let us know and also include anything that you couldn't complete in the guideline. Be as specific as possible as the more information we have the better we will be able to help you
    .
Also, in order to help you better we need to know what your OS (operating system) is.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem: make sure that you post back letting us know what you could and couldn't complete in the Read Me First guide and what problems still exist and in the meantime please read the following guide and then wait for us to ask you to post your HJT log as an attachment.

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread
NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Again after you post back to let us know if you are still having the problems please be as specific as possible as to what you couldn't complete and as to what problems still exist as the more information we have the better we will be able to help you.

Please also be patient in waiting for replies and responses as there are a limited number of people who are able to help you and as you can see by the posts on this forum there are many people out there who have questions/problems. Thanks and again welcome to MG :)

    sw:)

Note: this will be fairly vague, as I am not one of the gurus that generally post solutions on this site. Also I am in front of my Mac, not my PC so the paths I'll give will be "loosely named"
That said, I dealt with the same problem helping a friend last night. If you go to Control Panel: Display. Then select the background, or desktop tab (you see what I mean about loosely) There will be a "web" tab. If there is something in that box - probably "Security" or something similar delete, disable or remove from there.
    Hope that helps.

Ok I see what you are saying and I am sitting infront of a PC so I will give the steps to check that out but also it won't hurt to run the read me first as a precaution.

The simple way to do it now mind you I am on a WinXP Home Edition OS but here goes..
    Right click on dekstop
    Select Properties
    Click Desktop Tab
    Click on Customize Desktop
Click on Web Tab and make sure that no boxes are checked within that tab.

There ya go hope that helps and like I said you probably should still complete the read me first tutitorial to be on the safe side to make sure that you are free from spyware

    Have a good day/evening

In my case, right clicking the desktop was crashing Win Explorer and left clicking anywhere was sending me to the site. That's why I posted the Display control panel route.
Anyway, thanks for clarifying. I just wanted to add my agreement to your suggestion. That desktop thing was about the easiest thing I have had to deal with in my latest quagmire. If something like that that can get in, you are very likely vulnerable to something much worse (if it's not already there) Read all the pinned topics and get a stitch in time if you can.
