Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.9)
Sunbelt CounterSpy <--- we are finished with this trial now and you already have Windows Defender running.

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Also Run this ViewpointKiller to remove Viewpoint Media software.

You have a few LOP infection we need to remove.

Start by downloading a tool we will need - Pocket KillBox

Save it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [meta 32] C:\DOCUME~1\riotk\APPLIC~1\EXITER~1\Type Proc Bib.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nurbdebugdeafclose] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\meow data nurb debug\stop creative.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Also fix the below unless you can explain why they cannot be accessed without being in the Trusted Zone.
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.eknowhow.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.eknowhow2.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.google.com.au
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://au.mcafee.com

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\meow data nurb debug\stop creative.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\riotk\Application Data\EXITERRORPOLL\Type Proc Bib.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\riotk\Application Data\EXITERRORPOLL\xwusbnvm.exe
    C:\Installers\ScrabbleSetup-dm.exe
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folders and delete if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\riotk\Application Data\EXITERRORPOLL
    C:\Documents and Settings\riotk\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\meow data nurb debug
    C:\Program Files\EXITERRORPOLL
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hi Chas,
thanks so much for your prompt reply - am just starting to run through the steps now. As for eknowhow being in the trusted sites, I do online web work with them and need them there so that IE allows all functions to be shown - insert image etc. Mcafee's my virus protection - not sure why it's in there and will take it and google out.

One question - I have another administrative account on this computer (which I ran through the same steps for and have the logs for). Do you want to see these as well?

    Thanks,
    riot

    Hey chas,

you're a legend! Have had IE open for 10 minutes and no pesky pop ups ;) .

All steps went well, no pendingfilerename prompt, reboot ok etc. I've attached the logs and will now disable System Restore, reboot, then re-enable it.

If you could let me know whether I need to upload the logs and run these steps for my other user account that'd be great.

Can't say thankyou enough - I've read the post on protecting myself from malware and will do my utmost to keep myself pest free from now on!!

    Cheers,
    riotk

    Those logs are clean!

Yes you can attach the logs for the other account but also tell me if this other account is currently having any problems.

    Hey chas,

hooray for clean logs :) !! I thought I wasn't having any problems with the other account but when I tried to get to this thread by typing it directly into the address bar I kept getting an "ie can't show this web page" message. Ended up having to get here through google. The logs for that account are from yesterday - haven't made any changes since then so hopefully they're still valid.

Thanks so much for having a look - no rush!!

Actually you have made changes. You ran the procedure to clean the first account so most of what is showing in these logs has been fixed already or has changed.

You should not have Spybot's Teatimer running (per the READ ME).
    Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
    • Run Spybot and click Mode
    • Select Advanced Mode.
    • Then click Tools and select Resident.
    • Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    • Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    • and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    • Now quit Spybot!

Now run HJT and fix the below:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunServer] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\Consumer\sunserver.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.google.com.au
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://au.mcafee.com

Now exit HJT reboot and attach a new HJT log. This account seems to be basically clean!

    Hey chas,

once again my humble thanks. Was able to follow all your steps, but couldn't find the entries in HJT quoted below:

I'm presuming they were deleted in my earlier clean...

    New HJT log attached,
    riot :)

Your log is clean; but you could run the below to remove Windows Messenger:

    Disable/Remove Windows Messenger

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
