Can't get to any sites besides MG

We went away for the weekend and before we left, everything was working fine. Only thing I remember doing before we left that might have been strange was an update on bigfix (and I don't remember what it was for ). Since I got back, I checked my email, logged on here, and then tried to check my Yahoo email, but everything is moving really slow and I get the "Cannot find server - page can not be displayed" screen for every other site I try to get to.

I'm really glad that I can at least get here but I'd like to be able to get to some other sites as well Does anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong?

I ran Adaware and got rid of some spyware, but it didn't really make a difference. I wasn't able to update it when I tried, it seemed like it connected, but wasn't able to download the update.

I also restarted in the hopes that it was just some wierd fluke, but that didn't do it either.

Anything else I should try? I figure Eric might konw what to do, but he's not coming home until Thursday.

I'm not sure what you're asking me to do. (I'm not a geek. I just like hanging around them. I'm trying though. ) Do you mean search Safe Mode and see what I come up with?

 

Ok, I just searched and see that there's something else you're asking me to do. Can you walk me through it?

Somehow the problem just solved itself. I have no idea what the problem was, but my computer is flying again now. Maybe a problem within the network here?

Anyway, can you still tell me how to do Safe Mode with Networking since it looks like you have to tell people to do it a lot, and I should probably learn? It may come in handy someday.

 

reboot the machine.. just before it gets to the windows logo/boot screen hit F8 on your keyboard. It will bring up a menu with options. Choose the one that says "SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING" with your arrow keys. hit enter.

if that doesn't work then we need to check some other things.

 

If you are on DSL that is using PPPoE and not behind a router, or dsl/router combo, then SafeMode won't work.

However, its a good test for "always on" ethernet connections like cable or LANs. Its just about as close as you can get to a clean network environment in XP without formatting your machine and disabling tons of stuff. So, it becomes nifty and handy at times.

However, if it started working again, maybe there was just a hiccup in your service?

 

I believe that we are behind a router, and safe mode did work, so I know how to do it for next time.

I'm assuming that it was a problem with the network.

thanks guys! I'm just glad I was at least able to get here! I think I would have been lost if I couldn't.

 

Yeah XP dns stuff messes up sometimes quite often and the only sites I can acces are the ones that it has cached the dns on (just the last few recent ones) so I sometimes can fix it by just restarting the dns or rebooting the computer.

 

Yahoo loaded slow yesterday and today. I blame it on the latest wlorm, but what do I know?

We're still running 2000 Professional. I really think it was problems with our network. Don't know why I was able to get here and not anywhere else (except for maybe the mercy of God, so I'd be able to ask you guys for help )

Stuff like this always happens when Eric is gone I think he must sabotage the machine before he leaves to show me how much I need him
