When I try to open Windows Update, nothing happens... no windows open, no error messages, nothing...

Firefox is my default browser, when I try to open Internet Explorer, my system freezes and has to be restarted.

Pentium 4 3.0 ghz, 2 mb ram, Windows XP Pro

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

You need Windows Explorer to get Windows updates, from Microsoft.
If Explorer is freezing on you, it might be short of a particular update.
To get updates to correct it try downloading the autopatcher XP May 2007, first, then running it.

I found this helpful as its the full version

Thanks baklogic-- I had to run autopatcher twice before it was happy-- but still no luck with IE or Windows Update-- any more ideas?

    Thanks...

plodr, sorry but until Explorer is fixed, SweetPea cannot get to Microsoft update, as Firefox is the one used at the moment.

This will bring you more , or, less, up to date.

I hope you have your XP disc available, as the next step, if that does not find a fix, is to go to
Start, run, type in sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc), and then put your Windows disc in the cd/dvd rom drive.
Alittle box will come up and you need to sit with your finger on the mouse button to keep clicking retry, until it has finished.
Again come back and let us know the outcome.

    Thanks, both of you.

Baklogic, I downloaded and tried to install the update, and got the following message: "WinXP July 2007 x86 ENU ... Missing"

I'll see what I can find out about that... I know it wont be on my XP disk, it dates from 2005.

    Thanks, I'll be back...

Now , you can get to the yahoo site with firefox I tried it, and it gets to it, without explorer)
There is not normally any need to uninstall theInternet Explorer you have, and it is possible, but unnecessary- I would certainly update explorer from there, and then you should be able to get automatic updates again from Microsoft.
I am assuming that you ticked the critical and other updates boxes in autoupdate ?Otherwise they would not be updated with that program.
    SFC /SCANNOW could help, still.
