i was trying to connect a second notebook to the internet.. installed the cable modem on it and plugged the usb cable in but i cant connect to the net. all i get is the Limited of No connectivity error message. even if i only connec one at notebook at a time it wont work.. ive checked if all the protocols are installed and they seem to be there.. dunno what else to do..
the modem is a Arris Touchsrone Device and the provider is UPC if that matters..
i know this is a vague description of the problem but i simply dont know what else to look for..
setting up networks and internet is always a mistery to me.. sometimes it works right away, sometime it works only 50% of the time.. and in this case it dont work at all...help?

I think he means the USB interface cable of the modem!! (Modem connected via USB to PC . . . )

Could you exactly explain to us how you wanted to connect both laptops to the internet! Think this would help!

Did the modem work on the one laptop before?

well basically i just want to use the connection i have on the current notebook on another newer notebook cause its lots faster.. it would be best if i can have them both connected at the same time, but thats not a must and right now im just tryin to connect one at a time, the new one right now. i have a modem installation cd which i used and i selcted USB as an interface device instread of Ethernet. to my knowledge there is nothing else i need to do besides running the setup from the cd. however it doesnt work. i get the Limited connectivity error message and i dont know how to make it work. all the protocols seem to be there in the connection.
    thanks for the help!

1st thing is to try power cycling your cable modem if you haven't yet. Sometimes when the MAC changes it needs a reboot to allow dhcp to work (very common here in florida at least). I would also check the Windows firewall (not sure how it would interact with a usb connection) and try disabling it if it's turned on. Last thing I can think of is unplug the usb, uninstall cable modem software, reinstall s/w, and try plugging usb back in.

    Hope this helps,

Perhaps I'm a little confused on this, but couldn't you have bought a 4 port cable modem/router? This way you can have both laptops hooked up at the same time.

I like your suggestion!! Had that Problem with a Cable Modem today! They register your MAC at the ISP(MANUALLY - took them about an hour).

Till that you cannot establish a connection! ... Took some time until I figured this out!! Usually I prevent calling the Provider for help!!
