Can't Grant Full Permissions In Windows 7

I noticed that in the root of my C drive, I only had the "New Folder" option and nothing else. With a little research, I found that I need to added "Full Control" permissions. So, when I selected my Local Disk C: and tried to apply "Full Control" to all the User Names in the Security tab, I get a notice stating that the following files are in use and can not be applied:

I've also tried it in Safe Mode, yet I get the same message.

I was wondering what the proper way to provide complete permissions to both my C drive and any/all sub-folders without running into any issues?

NOTE: I also read that the Authenticated User comes into play here. It was listed at first in my User List but not it has disappeared.

    Thanks!

Win 7's default permissions are there for good reason. What are you trying to achieve by tampering with them?

I'd just like to have the full functionality of the things in my context menu in the subdirectories of my C drive. Also, being that I'm solely the one who uses this PC, having Full Control over my entire system seems reasonable.

Is it possible to do this? I feel like I've went half way and got stuck somewhere in between (which can't be good).

To add things to the context menu, go to run and enter
    Code:
    shell:sendto
    Drop shortcuts into the window...

I don't think changing the default security permissions just so you can have them because your the only user on the system doesn't make sense to me.

If you need higher level access for maintaining then system then you should have an admin account, and have a limited user account for day-to-day tasks.

Some of these files/locations are vital to Windows and should NOT be altered. I know for a fact that not even the built-in administrator account does not have permissions to read or write to the "System Volume Information".

The other danger of having full access to the system is that anything that runs will also have full access to the system. If something malicious finds its way on to your system what's to stop it from harming your system?

Point taken. However, the issue remains that I'm stuck with one foot on either side as I did try to apply these full permission to everything on my C drive and only some of it stuck.

Is there an easy way to restore the default system wide permissions that originally installs with a fresh setup of Windows 7?

    Excellent! I'm looking good now!

Just one last follow-up on this issue.

As stated above, I do remember seeing a user listed in the "Security" tab of my C:\ drive entitled "Authenticated User." After applying the Full Permissions, this user name is now gone.

What happened to this user and should I try to re-add it back? Is it needed?

    Thanks!

    UPDATED:

I've did some research on Google and it appears that the "Authenticated User" can be re-added to the permission list, however, I'm wondering if that's something I should even attempt?

I ran the Windows Repair (All-In-One) to restore the permissions, yet "Authenticated User" did not return. I assume that in changing the permission to "Full" previously is what removed it, and now that it's not returned yet I'm wondering if I would do more harm than good in re-adding it.

However, it was there at default and I'd like to get things back to this as closely as I can.

What do you the Major's think?

I've separated this last part out into it's own thread as It probably best addressed as a separate issue. Thanks to all in this thread that helped with this permission issue!
